1st blog by Alan

Hi everyone, my name is Alan. I am a new lesson partner;
I just started working at “b” this month.
So far I am really enjoying it;
all the staff and members have treated me very well.

I am originally from the U.S., but it has been a long time since
I actually lived there; I came to Japan a little over nine years ago.
The typical question every foreigner living in Japan has probably heard at one time or
another is, “Why did you come to Japan?” For me, the answer is just because
I was looking for something different. I have traveled quite a bit, and
when I was still in university, I did some brief homestays in several
different countries: Mexico, Spain, France, and Nicaragua. (Most people
have to ask me where Nicaragua is; if you’re curious, go check a world map
and look at the small strip of land between Mexico and South America and
you’ll find it.)

All of those countries I stayed in when I was a student were fantastic and
unique in their own ways, and I had a lot of memorable experiences in each
of them. However, the one thing they all have in common is that they are
all western countries. When I was nearing the end of my university studies,
I realized I wanted to live somewhere really, really different; I wanted to
experience something unlike any of the western countries I had visited before.

One of my professors in university suggested Japan to me.
He explained that a lot of foreigners come to Japan to teach English.
The only problems in my mind were, 1.
I had zero experience teaching professionally, 2. I had never
visited Japan before, and 3. I had zero knowledge of Japanese language.
Considering all of that, the thought of
committing to moving my entire life to another country which
I knew very little about, to do a job I had no training for – for at least a year or
more – was a little scary.

Nonetheless, I finally decided, why not at least give it a try? I did have
several close Japanese friends in the U.S. who were my classmates at
university, and so I already had an interest in the country.
Thus, while still in the US, I applied for a job as an Assistant Language
Teacher (ALT) to teach children in Japanese public schools.
Luckily I was offered the job, and in the summer of 2000 I was on a plane to Japan.
My final destination ended up being Toda City in Saitama, where
I was assigned to team teach elementary and junior high school students with
a Japanese teacher.

The first few days were hard, mostly because of communication. I could not
speak or read a single word of Japanese. Furthermore, I quickly found that
it was extremely difficult to find information in English or people who
could speak English compared to other countries I had visited before.
Simple things like grocery shopping became difficult because I could not
read any of the writing on many of the packages. I also remember that I had
a hard time washing my clothes because I could not read any of the buttons
on my washing machine. (The only solution I could find for that was asking
one of my new Japanese colleagues to visit my apartment and translate!)
There were problems like these almost on a daily basis. They were small,
but still frustrating.

But even though it was all confusing, I have to say it was fun. When you
suddenly find yourself in a situation where you cannot speak the local
language, you end up creating some pretty interesting gestures so that you
can communicate, and it was always easy to find people who were willing to
help me when I needed it. It was also exciting because everything was so
new for me here. Each day I could find so many things to be intrigued by:
the customs, the food, what people do for fun, the places to visit.

When I first came, I thought I would stay here for two, maybe three years
maximum. However, I never stopped finding things about this country to keep
me intrigued, so I stayed longer. I learned to love working as a teacher. I
learned about the culture. I learned to love the food. I made a lot of
friendships. And I picked up a lot of the language. (Although I am
embarrassed to say that I still do not know as much as I should!) Now,
after only a few more months, I will be celebrating my 10 year anniversary
in Japan. It is hard to believe that time has flown by so quickly.

A lot has changed for me since I came here; I’ve changed jobs twice, moved
apartments three times, and I have seen a lot of close friends, both
Japanese and foreign, come and go from the country. Nonetheless, I am still
enjoying my life here very much and I think I will continue to stay around.

Anyway, I hope that gives you an introduction into who I am and how I ended
up here. Thanks for checking my blog, and I look forward to getting to know
all of you more at school!
