So, one of our Lesson Partners, Aaron, kindly brought back some tasty treats from Okinawa for the bcafe staff.

While stuffing my face (not a very ladylike, but accurate, expression) we argued about the difference between cookies and biscuits.

Aaron is from the US so he insisted that the treats were cookies.

I, being from the UK, assured him that they were, in fact, biscuits.

レッスンパートナーのAaronがbのスタッフに沖縄の美味しいお菓子（ちんすこう）をお土産に買ってきてくれたの。

それを口いっぱいにほおばりながら（あまり上品ではないけれど、的確な表現なの！）クッキーとビスケットの違いについて討論になったの。

 

Aaronはアメリカ出身でそれはクッキーだと主張したんだけど、イギリス出身の私はそれは絶対にビスケットだと断言したわ！

 

American English and British English have some very subtle differences.

In the case of biscuits versus cookies, I think it's VERY VERY important to know what you might be ordering in a cafe!

アメリカ英語とイギリス英語は微妙な違いがあるの。

今回のビスケットVS クッキーについて知っておくことはカフェでオーダーするときにとってもとっても重要だと思うわ。

 

If you are in the UK and ask for a biscuit (general term), you will get something like this……
(biscuits are usually sweet and crunchy)

もし、あなたがイギリスにいて、ビスケット（一般的な）と頼んだら、下の写真のようなものをもらえると思うわ。。。（ビスケットは通常甘くてサクサクしてるの）

 

 

 

If you are in the UK and ask for a cookie, you will get one of these…… (specifically this type of chococlate chip biscuit)

もしあなたがイギリスにいて、クッキーと聞いたら、こんな感じのものをもらえるはず。。。
（具体的に言うとチョコチップ入りのビスケット）

 

 

 

If you are in the US and ask for a cookie (general term) you will get something like this……

もし、あなたがアメリカにいて、クッキー（一般的な）と頼んだら、こんな感じのものをもらえるはず。。。

 

 

 

If you are in the US and ask for a biscuit you will get this…..{in the UK we call this a scone!}

もしあなたがアメリカにいて、ビスケットと言ったらこれをもらえるはず。。。（イギリスではスコーンと呼んでいるわ！）
