Aside from teaching I do a little extra acting in my free time for fun and in this blog, I want to talk a little about some TV Show/Movie jobs that I have done in Japan in the last 10 years.

僕はカナダのトロント出身のアンドリューです。

b で働き始めたところだけど、皆さんに会うのがすごく楽しいよ！

僕は趣味の一環として、英語を教える以外に俳優業の仕事もしてるんだよね。だから、このブログの機会を利用して、今までの10年間で出演した日本のテレビ番組と映画の仕事について話そうと思うよ。

 

But first, I'm going to tell you a little about this type of work.

その前に、この仕事に関して少し説明するよ。

 

There are many opportunities for foreign actors/actresses in Japan. Even though there is skilled work for established talent, it is still very easy for amateurs and even beginners with some or no talent to get into this field.Japanese society is very cosmopolitan in its interests with many shows, commercials and promotions utilizing foreign performers.

僕たち外国人にとっては、日本での俳優業とかって結構機会があるんだ。俳優業って少し大変なイメージがあるかもしれないけど、全くの未経験者でもこの業界に入るのは結構簡単なんだ！日本の番組やコマーシャルは外国人を使っている国際的なものが多いからね。

 

A common characteristic in this profession like any other in Japan is the shortage of people to do the work.

In any big city in America, an
audition for actors would likely produce 50 or more people lined up to try
out for the part,

but in Japan there might only be 10 or 20. So the
percentages here in Tokyo for example, are much more in your favor.

でも、日本ではこういう仕事をやりたい人たちが結構少ないんだ。

アメリカの大きい都市とか行くと、演技をするためにオーディションを受けに行く人が50人とかそれ以上並んでるよ。

ところが日本では10人とか20人とかで少ないんだよ。

 

I myself started doing acting jobs 10 years ago. In 2002, my first appearance was on a TV show called Locker Hanako San(ロッカーのハナコさん) starring Tomosaka Rie.

じゃあここからは僕自身について話そうかな。僕はこの仕事は10年前からやっているんだけど、僕の初めての仕事は2002年のともさかりえさんが出演してる「ロッカーのハナコさん」っていうテレビ番組だよ。

 

 

 

 

Although it was a lot of fun to do, I learned that in this business you have to do a lot of waiting and even more waiting after that! And when you finally start shooting your part, you will likely find yourself doing it over and over until the director is pleased/satisfied….whatever!

I often wonder if the directors know themselves what they want because it always seems that they are just making up the script as we are filming! Anyways, I know their work requires creativity, is hard and stressful. I respect that.

この仕事はすごく楽しかったけど、大変なこともたくさんあったよ。自分のパートを撮影するまで、ずっとずっと待たされて、それで僕のパートの撮影が始まっても、ディレクターが気に入るまで、同じことを何回も何回もやらされるんだ！

いつも思うけど、ディレクターの人たちってどうやって作りたいとかちゃんと決めて来てるのかな？だって、カメラ撮影しながら、台本をつくっている気がするからさ。でも、彼らの仕事はすごいと思うよ。創造力が求められることだし、大変なはずだからね。

 

So moving on, since 2002, I have have been on other shows like Eigo De Shabera Night. Here, I was able to meet Shaku Yumiko on that show which was really exciting for me! Sadly that show stopped broadcasting in 2009.

Other jobs that I have done include: many NHK tv documentaries, the SMAP show, Zenkai Girl with Aragaki Yui, 2 commercials and I have done a few American Saigen Dramas on Unbelievable, Best House 123 and Sekai Gyoten News.

On April 28th, I will be in in a movie for the first time which I'm really excited about!. The film starring Abe Hiroshi is called Thermae Romae which originally is a comic story and has now been made into a theater movie. I was fortunate to actually meet Abe San at my sports gym a few weeks ago and say hello to him!

2002年以降は、英語でしゃべらナイトっていう番組に出させてもらったよ。そこでは釈由美子さんと出演する事ができたよ。すごく楽しかったね！でも2009年にその番組は終わっちゃったんだけどね。

あとその他の仕事では、NHKのドキュメンタリー、SMAPの番組、新垣ユイちゃんと全快ガールズ、コマーシャルを２つ、アンビリバボー、ベストハウス、世界仰天ニュースの再現ドラマとかに出たよ。

あとは4月28日には初めて映画に出るんだ。これは本当に楽しみだね！「テルマエ･ロマエ」っていう阿部寛さんが出るコミックストーリーの映画だよ。2.3週間前に彼にスポーツジムで会って挨拶したよ。
