I’ve been doing a lot of karaoke recently.
I love karaoke, but this is actually a bit out of the norm for me –
usually I go only every once in a while, maybe once or twice a month, if that.
Lately, however, I’ve been finding myself going once or twice a week!
最近、私は沢山カラオケをしていたわ。
私はカラオケが大好きよ。でも実はこれはちょっと異常なの。
いつもは月に1,2回とか、たまに行くくらいなんだけど、
最近は週に1,2回も行っていることに気づいてしまったわ！

I go with different groups of people, and the experience is different every time.
If I’m with a group of friends from Western countries, usually we will all pick songs
that everyone knows, and everyone in the room will sing along,
regardless of whoever has a mike at any given time. By the end of the night,
everyone will be standing and dancing, and most of the music will probably be ‘90s pop.
If I’m with a group of mixed Japanese and Westerners, the music will also be a mix,
and usually we’ll start off taking turns singing (although by the end of the night,
usually everyone will be singing anyway!).
私は違うグループの人達と一緒に行くので、経験は毎回異なるわ。
ヨーロッパ人の友人と一緒の時は、私達は誰でも知っている曲を選んで、
誰がマイクを持っていても、部屋にいる全員で一緒に歌うわ。
夜更けまでには皆立って踊っていて、ほとんどの音楽は多分90年代のポップね。
もし私が日本人とヨーロッパ人とのグループと一緒にいたら、音楽もミックスされるわ。
そしていつも私たちは交替で歌い始めるの。
（いずれにしろ、たとえ夜更けでも皆歌ってるの！）

I enjoy the Japanese style of karaoke, where you go in with your friends to your own room.
American style karaoke is a little different – we don’t have karaoke rooms,
but instead we have karaoke bars, where there’s a little stage set up,
and you sing in front of everyone in the bar. I like that style too;
it’s fun to get up in front of an audience and belt out a song.
Even if you’re not a great singer, it doesn’t really matter, since it’s a bar and everyone is drinking anyway!
私は日本のカラオケスタイルを楽しんでいるわ。友達と一緒に個室に行くのよね。
アメリカのカラオケスタイルは少し違うの。アメリカには個室はないの。
でもその代わりにカラオケ・バーがあるわ！小さなステージがあって、バーにいる全員の前で歌うのよ。
そのスタイルも好きよ。観衆の前に立って大きな声で歌うのは楽しいわ。
たとえ偉大な歌手でなくても、関係ないわ。だってそこはバーだし、どうせ皆お酒を飲んでいるから！

I went to one place like that last year in Roppongi, although I’m not sure if it’s still there today.
Karaoke bars don’t seem to be too common in Japan, although there are karaoke rooms everywhere you turn.
Every time a friend visits me from America, I end up taking them to karaoke, even if it’s unintentional at first!
Last spring, a friend visited, and we went out with a group of people to an izakaya
(another very Japanese experience that as far as I’ve seen doesn’t have much of an equivalent in Florida),
and afterwards we decided to do some karaoke on a whim.
今もまだあるかは分からないけれど、去年、六本木のカラオケバーみたいな所に行ったの。
日本ではカラオケの個室はどこへ行ってもあるけど、カラオケバーはあまり一般的じゃないようね。
友達がアメリカから訪ねて来る度に、たとえそれが最初は意図的ではなくても、
結局彼らをカラオケに連れて行くことになるわ！去年の春、友達が訪ねて来て、何人かの友人と居酒屋
（私の知る限りフロリダでは等価物を見たことがないもう一つのまさしく日本の経験）
に行った後、思いつきでカラオケをすることに決めたわ。

Last New Years, another friend visited me, and we went out with a group intending to go to Meiji Shrine,
but after discovering that it was insanely packed,
we turned around and decided to do some karaoke instead to ring in the new year.
I like to sing Japanese songs as well as English ones, even though I don’t always understand everything that I’m singing.
Arashi, Mr Children, Remioromen, and Bump of Chicken are my favorite Japanese bands to sing at karaoke.
(My range is very low, so it’s easier for me to sing bands with male vocalists ^^;; )
新年には、もう一人の友達が私を訪ねて来て、私たちはグループで明治神宮に出かける予定で出かけたの。
でも、発狂しそうなすし詰め状態を発見した後、私たちは振り返って、新年の鐘を鳴らす代わりに
カラオケをすることに決めたわ。
私がカラオケで歌う、嵐、ミスター・チルドレン、レミオロメン、バンプ・オブ・チキンはお気に入りのバンドよ。コンサートも東京ドームに行ったこともあるくらい。
全てを理解しなくても、英語の曲と同じくらい日本語の曲を歌うのが好きだわ。
（私の音域は凄く低いから男性のボーカリストのバンドを歌うのは簡単なの（＾＾）
