Japanese History Is Interesting! Brenda
I'm Not a History Buff, But Japanese History Is Interesting!
I don't know about you, but history was never my favorite subject in school.
Not that I disliked it, but just that it didn't seem very interesting at the time.
Mostly, it seemed like a bunch of names, dates, and places to memorize.
(No offense to those of you who are real history buffs! I'm learning . . . !)
However, this Christmas, my Japanese husband gave me an English translation of 細川ガラシャ夫人("Hosokawa Garasha Fujin") by 三浦綾子 (Miura Ayako).
The English title is "Lady Gracia: A Samurai Wife's Love, Strife and Faith.
" Although it's a historical novel, it is based on many facts as well.
The main character is the daughter of the samurai, Akechi Mitsuhide, who is famous, or rather infamous, for his betrayal and assassination of Oda Nobunaga.
She married Hosokawa Tadaoki at the age of 15. Not unlike many modern tales of love, she experienced both happy times and times of tremendous pain and grief.
However, the stakes were much higher back then, as those were days of fighting between various warlords for control of the land.
It was not only historically enlightening, but it was a great story, too! Once I started, I could hardly put it down! So what happens in the end? I'm not going to tell you . . . if you want to know that, you'll have to read it for yourself!
Anyway, as a result of the book, I became more interested in Japanese history, so I visited the Edo-Tokyo Museum near Ryogoku Station a few days ago.
There, you can see models of how both the townspeople and the families of the daimyo lived during the Edo Period, as well as many other articles. (There are English labels for some of the exhibits, as well.)
The Edo-Tokyo Museum was really great, but I still want to learn more about the specific history of the Hosokawa clan, so next time I plan to visit the Eisei-Bunko Museum near Edogawabashi Subway Station.
yApparently, this museum was founded in 1950 by the 16th daimyo (feudal lord) of the Hosokawa clan, so I'm hoping to find out more historical details about the inspiring life of Hosokawa Gracia.
And all that for a person who's normally not interested in history!
Happy New Year and Happy Reading!
