I grew up in Oklahoma, a state in the US.

It is part of America's "Great Plains", the very flat woods and grasslands in the heart of the country.

Oklahoma isn't very famous in America, and is mostly remembered as a place full of roughcowboysand their ranches- big farms for raisinglivestocklikecattleandhogs.

Many Japanese have heard the name 'Oklahoma' from the "Oklahoma Mixer" song/dance.

It may surprise you, but that song is unknown in Oklahoma!

Sometimes, Oklahoma is also sometimes confused with the state of Idaho – another countryside state that is famous for its potatoes.

僕はアメリカのオクラホマ州で育ちました。

そこは平坦な木々や草原が生い茂るアメリカの中心部のグレートプレーンズ（北アメリカ大陸中西部の大平原）と呼ばれる中にあります。

オクラホマはアメリカですごく有名な場所という訳ではないですが、多くの人は、暴れん坊なカウボーイや牛や豚を育てる大きな牧場のような放牧場 がたくさんあることをイメージするでしょう。

日本人は「オクラホマミキサー」という曲とダンスでオクラホマの名前を聞いたことがある方が大勢いるようですね。

ちょっと驚くかもしれませんが、オクラホマではあまりその歌を知られていません！

時々オクラホマはポテトの産地で有名な、アイダホ州とと間違えられることがあります。

 

 

 

Because of its position in the middle of the country, Oklahoma tends to get a lot ofextreme weather.

Our state song, which is from a musical ("Oklahoma!") famously includes the phrase "…where the wind comes sweeping down the plains."

With no mountains, the winds blowing across the land can be very strong!

Another big difference between Oklahoma and Japan, is how commonthunderstorms are.

I grew up hearing the rolling thunder and patter of rain very often, so the sound is relaxing to me.

Because it's so flat, you can sometimes see giant thunderhead clouds (see picture) approaching from many miles away.

The winters in Oklahoma sometimes bring snow and ice-storms as well – although not nearly as much as when I lived in Fukushima prefecture!

Sometimes we'd also get hail – hard balls of ice falling from the sky… bigger than golf balls!

The damagehailstonescan do to a roof or a car is pretty shocking.

国の中心に位置する理由からオクラホマはものすごい天候に見舞われることがよくあります。

州歌には、「風が平原にさーっと流れてくるところ」というミュージカル（「オクラホマ！」）というものからきている有名なフレーズが使われているフレーズがあります。

山がない所では風が大地を通りとても強く吹くのです！

他の日本とオクラホマの違いは雷がよく鳴るということです。 雷の音と強い雨音をよく聞いて育ってきたので、僕にとってはその音はリラックスできる音だったな。

その地域は平坦な場所なので、遠くから大きな入道雲（写真を見て下さい）がどんどん迫ってくるのが見ることができるのところなのです。

オクラホマでの冬はたまに雪が降り、氷雨が混じった暴風が吹くことがあります。

しかし、福島に住んでいたほどではなかったです。

また時々ヒョウが降ることもあります。

それは空から氷の堅いボールが降ってくるような感じでそれはゴルフボールより大きいものもあるのです！

ヒョウは車や家の屋根をもダメージを与えるものでかなりの災害を受けます。

 

 

 

 

 

 

One nickname for Oklahoma is "Tornado Alley", and it is well-deserved.

Tornadoes are the big, funnel-shaped clouds that appear suddenly and can be extremely dangerous to anything that gets in their way –

and then disappear just as quickly.

We sometimes call them 'twisters' or 'whirlwinds', and in Oklahoma they are a serious problem!

The winds inside a tornado are so strong and fast, they can throw cars and trucks (and cows!) like leaves in the wind -there are famous anecdotes of pieces of straw impaled straight through atelephone pole.

In the path of a tornado, houses and buildings don't stand a chance.

I have heard that tornadoes are quite rare in Japan, but in Oklahoma they happen on a regular basis. In school, we learn how totake coverfrom tornadoes and notice thetelltale signsof one forming.

オクラホマのニックネームは「Tornado Alley（トルネード街道」で、それはとても意味があるニックネームなのです。

トルネードとはとても大きくでて突然現れる細長く回転している雲が、何もかも奪い去るものすごく危険なものです。

そしてすぐに消えてなくなるのです。

私達はそれを時々「twisters(竜 巻）」または「whirlwinds'(旋風)」と呼び、これはオクラホマでは深刻は問題となっています。

トルネードの風の中はとても強く、早く、風で舞う葉っぱのように車や大型トラック（牛でさえ！）投げ出されるのです。

それには（車やト ラックが麦の束のように軽く簡単に飛ばされてしまうという比喩から、）麦の束が電柱にまっすぐ突き刺さるというような逸話があります。

トル ネードの進路内では、家やビルは（崩れ落ちるほか）望みはないのです。

日本ではトルネードが発生することはとてもまれだと聞いています が、オクラホマではとても頻繁に起きるのです。

学校ではトルネードからどう非難するかや、トルネードが来そうな時の前兆現象を学ぶのです。

 

Recently, a series of unusually strong tornadoes tore through Moore, Oklahoma, very close to where my older brother and some of my friends live! Luckily, the storms just missed them, but some of their coworkers weren't so lucky!

最近、ムーアというオクラホマ州の中心部の都市で、そこは僕の兄と何人かの友人が住んでいるところなのですが
普通ではないような強いトルネード達が襲い崩壊していったのです！

幸いにもその嵐は彼らのところには来なかったのですが
彼らの何人かの同僚達は幸運には報われなかったのです！

I have only lived in Japan for 2 years now, and apart from the deep snow when I lived in Aizu, I haven't seen much extreme weather…and that's a good thing!
