Scary story books by Michael

With Halloween soon approaching, I thought it would be good fun to share with you some of the scary story books I read when I was younger.

Beware, these stories are not for the squeamish or faint of heart. However, since they are aimed a younger readership they are relatively easy to read and a bit thrilling.

I recommend for anyone that likes scary stories and horror.

ハロウィンが近づいているので、僕が昔に読んだ怖い話の本を、皆さんと共有したら楽しいと思いました。

これらの話は、ショックを受けやすかったり臆病な人には向かないから気を付けくださいね。

だけど、若者の読者層を目的としているから、比較的読みやすくて少しスリリングです。

怖い話やホラーが好きな皆さんにお薦めします。

◆Goosebumps series

Goosebumps is perhaps the most popular children’s horror fiction series in the United States.

Written by R.L.Stine, the series spans 62 volumes with stories that feature different supernatural happenings and monsters. With a few notable exceptions, most of the books are unrelated, each having its own story and characters.

My personal favorites are The Haunted Mask (Volume 11), Night of the Living Dummy (Volume 7), The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb (Volume 5) and The Werewolf of Fever Swamp (Volume 14).

Goosebumpsは、このシリーズはおそらくアメリカで一番人気の、子供向けのフィクションホラーです。

R.L.スタインによって書かれた、異なる特色の超常現象やモンスターの話が62巻にわたるシリーズです。いくつかの注目すべき例外をのぞいて、ほとんどの本は関連がなくそれぞれが独自の物語を持っています。

僕個人のお気に入りは「The Haunted Mask (Volume 11)」、「Night of the Living Dummy (Volume 7)」、「The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb (Volume 5)」そして、「The Werewolf of Fever Swamp (Volume 14)」です。

◆Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, written by Alvin Schwartz, is a series of three books that are a collection of folklore and urban legends.

The series is just as notorious (if not more so) for its gruesome illustrations done by Stephen Gammell (although current editions use different illustrations by Brett Helquist which has met scathing criticism from fans of the original illustrations).

Gamell’s illustrations are very disturbing and eery, and they served as a great facilitator for the dread that lie ahead in each story.

Some stories, like “The Red Spot,” “The Viper” and “The Hook,” stay with you for the rest of your life. “The Red Spot” definitely exacerbated and solidified my fear of spiders, a fear I’m only learning to overcome now…

シュヴァルツ作の「Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark」は、民間伝承や都市伝説を集めた3冊のシリーズです。

このシリーズはよく知られている通り（そうでなかったとしても）、ステファン・ガメルによってぞっとするイラストが描かれています（現行版にはブレッド・ヘルキストによるイラストが使われていますが、それはオリジナルイラストのファンから厳しい批判を受けています）。

ガメルのイラストはとても不穏で不気味、そして、それぞれの物語で待ち受けている恐ろしさへの素晴らしい促進薬の役目を果たしています。

「The Red Spot」「The Viper」そして「The Hook」のような話は、一生忘れられないでしょう。

「The Red Spot」は僕の蜘蛛に対する恐怖を確実に悪化させて強くしましたが、今これから克服しようとしています。

◆Bony-Legs

The final book I recommend, Bony-Legs written by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Dirk Zimmer, was actually my sister’s favorite scary book when she was a child.

We often read it a number of times.

Bony-Legs features the mythical Slavic witch Baba Yaga as the antagonist.

She is a very powerful, scary old woman who eats children and lives in a house standing on chicken legs.

The story is about a young girl named Sasha who encounters this frightening witch.

最後におすすめする、ジョアンナ・コール作、Dirk Zimmerによるイラストが描かれた「Bony-Legs」です。

実は僕の姉妹達が子供の頃に大好きだった怖い本です。

僕たちは度々何度も読み返しました。

スラブ民族の神話の魔女「バーバ・ヤーガ」を主人公として大きく取り扱っています。

彼女はとても強くて、鶏の足に建つ家に住み、子供を食べる怖いおばあさんです。

この物語は、若い女の子サーシャが恐ろしい魔女に遭遇する話です。

Considering the many different kinds of ghosts, monsters, and demons that populate Japanese folklore, I wonder what kind of scary stories Japan has?
