Cold weather is the perfect weather to stay indoors and catch-up on your reading.
For those who would like a challenge, this may be the perfect time to try reading some English stories!!
グッデイ！！段々寒くなってきましたね。
寒い日には屋内で過ごすのにはとても最適で読書も捗りますね。
英語の物語を読みたいと思っている方には絶好の時間になるかもしれません。

Story-telling is always a unique style of language. In English, there are many phrases we use in story telling that come from old English (昔言葉）. Modern English (英語の現代語) doesn`t use this style of language anymore and so the words can be a little confusing.
Here is a short guide to English story-telling phrases.
昔話は、いつも独特な表現が使われます。昔話で私たちがよく使うフレーズの中にはOld english（古英語） から由来するものがたくさんあります。Modern English（現代英語）ではけっしてそういった表現は使わないため、時として私たちを戸惑わせされるかもしれません。
ここでは、簡単に英語の昔話で使われるフレーズについて紹介してみます。

Once upon a time….
This is the start of the story. This means the author doesn`t really know when this story happened. The year it happened isn`t clear.
「Once upon a time…」＝昔々
この表現は物語の始まりに使用され、作者にとっても実際いつの出来事なのか、年代もはっきりとは分からない状態です。。

Far away…
This is about where the story takes place. Usually means somewhere that no longer exists or may never have existed.
「Far way…」＝遥か彼方
この表現はその物語の起こった場所を示しており、もはや存在していない場所か或は存在もしていない場所を表しています。

◎Wicked witch….
This is usually the villian or bad guy in the story. Sometimes referred to as an evil queen, evil wizard or sorcerer.
「Wicked witch」＝邪悪な魔女
こちらのフレーズは物語の中で悪人を表します。時には魔女、魔術師、邪悪な女王様とも表されます。

◎Enchantment / Curse….
This is a magic spell. Usually this is placed on the hero or princess in stories. The hero or princess will have to break this spell to win.
「Enchantment/Curse…. 」＝魔法/呪いの言葉
これは、魔法の呪文です。よく物語の中の主人公や王女様は魔法をかけられ、その魔法のおまじないを解かなければならないでしょう。。

◎Slain / Slayed…
This is a verb to describe defeating someone. Usually the hero defeats the villain or the villain`s monsters. Also often with a sword or a magic weapon.
「slain /slayed …」＝殺す
これは誰かを負かすときに表現する動詞です。主人公は剣や魔法の武器で悪人やモンスターを倒します。

◎Vanquished…
This is a verb to describe defeating someone. Usually this is how we describe something being defeated by magic.
「Vanquished…」＝征服する。
この表現も誰かを打ち負かすときに表す動詞です。

◎Ran off into the sunset….
This is usually at the end of the story. This is a romantic ending about the hero or princess finding happiness. They can leave their troubles in the past and move on.
このフレーズは、その物語の最後に使われ、その主人公や王女が幸せをみつけ、ロマンティックな最後であることを表物語を閉めます。彼らは、過去の苦難を乗り越える事ができ、先に進む事ができたのです。

◎Lived happily ever after….
Another romantic ending. It tells us that everything worked out in the end. All the heroes are happy.
「Lived happily ever after」＝目出たし目出たし
こちらも、ロマンティックな最後を表します。最終的に全ての事がうまくいき、全ての人たちが幸せになった事を表します。

◎This happened to a friend of a friend of mine….
This is used at the start of a story. It tells us that this story didn`t happen to the person telling it. It also means that its likely the story is different from any facts connected to it. No one really knows where or when it started.
こちらも、物語の始めに使われます。その話を伝えている人に起こったでき事ではない話であり、伝えられた話は事実と異なるでしょう。結局は何時、何処で始まったのか誰も知らないのです。

◎Myth / Mythical…
This is a story that is very old and is likely not true. If we use it as an adjective, it means the object is something people believe isn`t real.
「Myth/Mythical」＝神話/神話的な、架空の
この単語は、恐らく事実ではないとても古いお話をさし、形容詞として使うのであれば、人々が信じている実在しないあるモノをさします。

◎Legend / Legendary…
Very similiar to myth. A legend is a story that is based on real events or facts. It has been repeated many times before and some of the details may have been changed. The original story is true. If we use it as an adjective, it means the object is something that is believed to be true but has been lost.
「Legend / Legendary」＝伝説/伝説上の
myth（神話）とよく似た意味を持ちます。Legend(伝説)は実際の出来事や事実をもとにしたお話を言います。何回も何回も言い伝えられている為、少し話の内容が変わってしまっているかもしれません。形容詞として使うのであれば、既に、滅び、亡くなっているが事実であると信じられているあるモノをさします。
