Today I’m going to talk about some interesting expressions in English using
the word “elephant”. We don’t use these much in everyday conversation, but they often appear in movies, books and television.

今日は、elephant(ゾウ)という単語を使った英語の面白い表現を紹介します！日常会話で頻繁に使うっていうわけじゃないけど、映画や本、テレビでたまに聞くことがありますよ。

 

A “white elephant” is a gift that is expensive but useless. This expression comes from an old story about a king who received a white elephant as a gift. It was rare and beautiful, but it ate a lot of food and took up a lot of space, so it was useless.

“white elephant”とは、高くで使い道のない贈り物のこと。この表現は、白いゾウを贈り物としてもらった王様の話に由来しているの。白いゾウは、目珍しいし美しかったけれど、たくさん食べるし場所もとって、無用だったってことね。

 

Examples:

My aunt gave me a big painting for birthday. It’s too big for my wall,
so it’s a white elephant.

おばさんが誕生日に大きな絵をくれた。私の部屋の壁にかけるには大きすぎて、
無用の長物だ。

 

We are having a white elephant gift exchange at the Christmas party —
everyone is bringing something that they received but can’t use.

私たちはクリスマスに持て余したものをプレゼントとして交換する。みんな以前にもらったけれど使わなかったものを持ち寄るのだ。

 

 

An “elephant in the room” is a big problem that no one wants to talk about,
because it is too difficult or embarrassing. The image is of people in a
small room with a big elephant, walking carefully around it so they don’t
bother it.

とても難しいあるいは恥ずかしいという理由で、だれも話したがらない大きな問題のことを「部屋の中のゾウ」と表現します。小さな部屋に大きなゾウと一緒に入れられて、邪魔しないようにゾウの周りを注意して歩くようなイメージです。

 

Examples:

The CEO didn’t talk about our budget problems at the meeting — it was
an elephant in the room.

CEOは会議で予算問題について触れなかった。それは、みんな知っているが話すのを避けている問題なのだ。

 

The movie star looked beautiful at her interview, but her scandal last
year was an elephant in the room.

その映画女優は、インタビューではとても美しく見えたが、昨年のスキャンダルは誰も触れられないほど恥ずべきものだった。

 

 

 

We say that we see “pink elephants” when we’ve had too much to drink.
The most famous example of this is in the Disney movie, Dumbo, when Dumbo
drinks a little beer by mistake.

お酒を飲みすぎてしまった時には、「ピンクのゾウが見える」と言います。この表現の一番有名な例は、ディズニー映画の「ダンボ」のなかで、ダンボが間違ってビールを飲んでしまう時に使われています。

 

Examples:

I drank so much at the party that I saw pink elephants.

パーティで飲みすぎてしまい、ピンクのゾウが見えた。
