皆さん、お正月はいかがお過ごしになられましたか？

私はというと鎌倉の長谷寺に初詣にいきました☆
今年も素敵な一年になるようにしっかりお祈りしてきました(^^)

家族でゆっくり過ごした方、旅行に行かれた方、色々な過ごし方があったと思います。

ところで、日本在住の外国人は日本での年末・お正月をどのようにすごしているのでしょう？
そこで今回は、お正月をテーマにしてレッスンパートナーにアンケートをとってきました！

出てくる単語は、ご自身が英語で日本の正月を説明するときにも使えますよ！

大みそか・お正月の過ごし方

■What did you do on New Year’s Eve and on New year’s day?
～大みそか・お正月は何をして過ごしましたか？～

I went to my husband’s hometown which is Fujisawa and visited my favorite temple – Hase Temple. I like this temple because of the Hase goddess who is known to listen to the prayers of women. I find it very fascinating.

私は、藤沢市にある旦那さんの実家に行きました。そして私の好きな長谷寺に行きました。このお寺の神様は女性の願いを叶えてくれることで有名なのです。とても魅力的ですよね。

On New Years Eve, I was in Montreal, Canada. I went to a friend’s home for dinner. She cooked a delicious beef roast and her husband served very tasty French red wine.
The last subway train in Montreal is at 12:30 AM, so my friend drove me to the subway station at 11:45 PM. When we arrived at the station, it was exactly 12 AM, so we wished each other “Happy New Year”.

大晦日の日、私はカナダのモントリオールにいました。友人の家へ夕食を食べに行きました。その奥さんはとても美味しいローストビーフを、旦那さんは素晴らしいフランス産のワインをごちそうしてくれました。モントリオールの最終電車は深夜0時30分でしたので、夜11時45分出発し、友人がその駅まで車で送ってくれました。駅に到着したのは、深夜12時ぴったりでしたので、そこで私達は新年を祝いました。

I ate Toshi-Koshi Soba on New Year’s eve.
Woke up for the first sun-rise of the New year in Naoshima.
Rented an electric bicycle and cycled around the many art sites and museums.
Yakiniku for New Year’s dinner.

大みそかには年越しそばを食べました。直島にて、初日の出を見ました。
自転車をレンタルして、美術館やアート作品を観てきました。夜は焼き肉を食べました。

外国人にとって年賀状は？

■Have you ever written “Nengajyo”? or Are there any custom like that?
～年賀状を送った事はありますか？また皆さんの国ではそのような習慣はありますか？～

I wrote Nengajyo once my first year in Japan. I sent them to some friends and family overseas to show them a little bit about Japanese culture. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any back!

日本に移住して1年目の年には年賀状を書きましたよ。友人やインドに住む家族に、少しでも日本の文化を見てほしくて送りました。ですが誰からも返事はもらえませんでした！

People used to send postcards but now most people send emails instead. It is always a good opportunity to re establish contact with people you haven’t talked to in a while

以前はポストカードを送る習慣がありましたが、今ではほとんどの人がメールで新年の挨拶をします。しばらく会えていない人にコンタクトをとる良い機会ですよね。

I usually send e-cards which can be a bit impersonal so I respect the Japanese culture of hand-written New Year’s Day postcards. It’s much more thoughtful than sending messages on SNS 🙂

私は大抵Eカードを送りますが、少し無機質に感じますね。だから、新年の挨拶を丁寧に書いて相手に送る日本の文化を尊敬します。SNSのメッセージよりも深みがありますよね。

日本在住の外国人にとってお正月の飾りはどうするの？

■How do you decorate your home in New Year (home,shop,company)
～お正月には、家や会社、お店に何か飾り付けをしますか？～

＊Judith/France
Most Christmas decorations usually stay up until after the New Year (especially the lights) . There is no specific decoration for the New Year.
年明け後もクリスマスの飾りを付けたままにしています。(特に照明等)　特にお正月の飾り付けはありません。

In the USA, no decorations. In Japan, we have a kagami mochi in the genkan, and a shime gazari on the front door. (Both thanks to my husband)　
アメリカでは、何かを飾る習慣は無いわね。日本では、玄関に鏡餅やしめ飾りを飾っています。（旦那さんが飾ってくれます)
