Chiikawa the Movie! by Chel’C

Aloha b members! It’s Chel’C.
It’s been hot. It’s been humid. It’s been hot and humid. Time to escape to the cinema!
Do you know Chiikawa? I am sure you have heard of it or at least seen the characters somewhere. It’s super popular in Japan!
アロハ、bのみなさん！Chel’Cです。

毎日暑いわね。蒸し暑いし、とにかく暑くてジメジメ！
こんなときは映画館に逃げ込むのが一番よね！

みなさん、「ちいかわ」を知ってる？
日本ではものすごく人気だから、きっと名前を聞いたことがあるか、キャラクターをどこかで見かけたことがあるんじゃないかしら。

I wasn’t into Chiikawa and as such, didn’t know much about it. Until recently.
Chiikawa has a new movie in theaters. It’s called Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island. I didn’t think too much about this movie until I read the rumors and gossip surrounding it. The rumors were insane!
実は私、これまで「ちいかわ」にはそれほど興味がなくて、あまり詳しくなかったの。つい最近まではね。

そんな「ちいかわ」の新作映画が公開されたの。タイトルは『映画ちいかわ人魚の島のひみつ』。
最初はこの映画のことをそれほど気にしていなかったんだけど、まわりでささやかれている噂や口コミを目にしてから、俄然気になり始めたのよね。
だって、その噂がもう、とんでもなかったの！

Several Japanese parents claimed that the movie made their children so scared that they cried. Those who watched it stated that when the film ended, the movie theater was dead silent. Fans were having in depth discussions about life and death with one another once they finished watching the movie. Life and death discussions?!
親御さんたちからは、その映画のせいで「子どもが怖がって泣き出してしまった」という声まで上がっていたの。
鑑賞した人々によると、上映が終わったあとの映画館は、なんとシーンと静まり返っていたんですって。
そして映画を観終えたファン同士で、「生と死」について真剣に語り合っていたという話まで……。
「生と死」についてですよ？！

The most bizarre piece of gossip was that this adorable looking film was compared to the likes of Evangelion and Hannibal Lecter. Can you believe that?! Evangelion and Hannibal Lecter?! This cute, small little creature that so many people love?!
そして、一番奇妙だった噂が、この愛らしい見た目の映画が、なんと『エヴァンゲリオン』や『ハンニバル・レクター』と比較されて語られていたこと！
信じられる？！あのエヴァンゲリオンとハンニバル・レクターよ？！
みんなに愛されている、あの小さくてかわいい「ちいかわ」なのよ？！

After weeks of these rumors popping up on my SNS, my mind was made up. This…Chiikawa officially caught my interest. I was going to watch the movie. But first, I needed to prepare myself a bit.
I watched a few episodes of Chiikawa on Netflix to better understand the characters and the storyline. The show is charming and I started to understand why the characters are so beloved. Maybe people were being overdramatic?
SNSでこんな噂を何週間も目にしているうちに、私の心は決まったわ。
この……「ちいかわ」に、とうとう興味をそそられてしまったの。映画を観に行こう！って。でもその前に、ちょっと予習しておかなくちゃね。

そこで、キャラクターやストーリーをもう少し知るために、Netflixで「ちいかわ」を何話か観てみたの。これがとってもかわいらしくて、キャラクターたちがこんなに愛されている理由も分かってきたわ。
あれ？映画が怖いっていう噂、もしかして、みんなちょっと大げさに騒いでいるだけなんじゃない……？

I purchased my ticket and headed to the movie theater. I was a little excited but tried not to get my hopes up in case people were indeed being too dramatic, haha.
映画のチケットを買って、いざ映画館へ！
ちょっとワクワクしていたんだけど、やっぱりみんなが大げさに騒いでいただけだったらガッカリしちゃうから、あまり期待しすぎないようにしていたの（笑）。

I watched the movie. It started off in the typical, endearing and charming way as the episodes on Netflix and then…it steadily started to shift.
そして、いよいよ映画がスタート。

最初はNetflixで観た「ちいかわ」と同じように、いつものほのぼのとした、かわいらしい雰囲気だったの。

ところが……少しずつ様子が変わり始めたのよね。

The credits rolled, the end scene played and indeed…there was a silent hush in the audience. There were 4 families in the movie theater with me, not a single child made a sound after the first part of the movie. They were silent. The couples and groups of friends around me commented to each other ‘kurai’.

And indeed, it was ‘kurai’. The rumors were not overdramatic. It was a rather dark story. And I suddenly understood why fans discussed life and death after watching it.
そしてエンドロールが流れ、最後のシーンも終わると……噂どおり、劇場内はシーンと静まり返っていたの。

私と一緒に観ていたのは4組の家族連れ。でも映画の前半を過ぎたあたりから、子どもたちは誰ひとり声を出さなくなっていたわ。本当に静かだったの。

周りにいたカップルや友達同士も、口々に「暗いね……」って。

そして、本当に「暗かった」のよ。
噂は決して大げさなんかじゃなかった。想像していた以上にダークな物語だったの。

そのとき、ファンの人たちがこの映画を観たあとに、どうして「生と死」について語り合うのか……私にもようやく分かった気がしたわ。

I did enjoy the movie though and it made me continue watching Chiikawa and their little adventures on Netflix! I have turned into a Chiikawa fan! Funny how that sometimes happens? You know nothing about a series and then you decide to give it a try and end up liking it!

Maybe people were being overdramatic?
「もしかして、みんなちょっと大げさに騒いでいるだけなんじゃない？」

overdramatic は、物事を実際よりも大げさに捉えたり、必要以上に騒いだりする様子を表す言葉。
日常会話でも「ちょっと大げさじゃない？」なんて言いたいときに使える表現です。
