Teacher:There are two basic【1.strategies】which companies use regarding their brands’ operation and control. One is known as the “House of Brands” and the other is known as the “Branded House” model. The “House of Brands” model is one in which a company owns a number of brands, each of which has its own independent products and services.
The “Branded House” model is one in which all products and services are bundled under one name. In many such cases【Point 1】the brand name and the company name are the same. Can you give some specific examples of companies operating each of the models?A:Wouldn’t LVMH Group be a good example of a company operating the “House of Brands” strategy? It owns many luxury brands, such as Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Krug, Guerlain, covering a wide range of industries. The【2.operation】and the marketing of each brand is left to the brand itself to independently conduct. As to companies implementing the “Branded House” model, I think Virgin Group is【3.typical】.【A】From the airline company, to the music stores, to the cinema chain, all are offered under the “Virgin” brand name.Teacher:I see. And what are the models’【4.respective】strong points and weak points?B:A merit of the “House of Brands” model is that the majority of consumers, when buying the company’s products, are not aware that they are buying them from the same company. If, for example, a company has trouble with one of its brands, then it can contain the problem without other brands in the portfolio being adversely affected. On the other hand, a clear demerit of the strategy is that investment in the brands is dispersed and it is difficult to achieve【B】economies of scale. As a result,【Point 2】the marketing costs necessary to grow each brand rise.

Teacher: Right. And how about the “Branded House” model?C:One merit is the reduction in marketing costs. It becomes easier to launch new products on the back of the company’s name recognition. Furthermore, as a result of the spending on one product, the company’s profile as a whole rises and serves to【5.promote】other of the company’s products as well.【C】On the downside, one disadvantage is that in the event of trouble with one product the company’s image as a whole is stained. This can result in sometimes huge losses which can threaten the very existence of the company.Teacher:So the relative merits and demerits of the two models, “House of Brands” and “Branded House”, are【D】two sides of the same coin, aren’t they. Moving on,let’s discuss how we can minimize the risks which arise from the two models respective disadvantages・・・■MBA頻出の便利な表現1. strategy(名詞)/strategic (形容詞)「strategy」を直訳すると「戦略」になります。
After record losses, management was forced to formulate a new strategy.
The company felt a new strategy needed to be devised if the company was to do well in Japan market.”
Strategic factors played a part in their decision.
The company operates many factories in South East Asia.
Operating costs are very high in many parts of Europe.
She was put in charge of overall operations at the London Office.
On a typical day he will be in meetings for many hours.
Typically, the company’s orientation for new recruits lasts three days.
The managers sent back reports to their respective offices after the meeting.
The four design teams put forward their respective designs.”
The company rented space at the exhibition center to promote its products.
The firm held several promotional events in Shibuya to launch its new products.
例えば本文中の、「the brand name and the company name are the same」の「the」は「a」では代替できません。
The company will trya different marketing approachthis time.
The company will usethe same ad agencyas the last time for the new marketing campaign.
Point 2:「rise(自動詞)」と「raise”(他動詞)」の使い分け本文中の「the marketing costs necessary to grow each brand rise」に着目してください。
My salary rose.
The company raised my salary.(目的語が必要)
Oil prices have risen steeply recently.
Many gas stands have raised their prices at the pump.(目的語が必要)
【A】「From the airline company, to the music stores, to the cinema chain」というところ。 【D】「裏表」を「two sides of the same coin」(コインの両サイド)というのは、ネイティブならではという感じ。
