The best thing with living abroad is coming home. by Susanna
After having lived in Tokyo for 4 years now I have started to feel more Swedish than I have ever done before in my life. It is very interesting how much more I have started to appreciate my homeland when I am not living there anymore. The small town I grew up in and used to think was so boring as young has become a small private haven for me.
海外に住んでいて一番いいことは、自分の国に帰れること。
日本に住んで4年、今までの人生で一番、自分がスウェーデン人なんだって感じ始めたの。母国を離れて初めて、どんなに母国を大事に思っているかを実感し始めたなんて、なんだかおもしろいでしょ。そこで生まれ育って、若い頃は退屈だと思っていた小さな町が、今の私にとっては、小さな自分だけの安心できる場所なんだもの。
The cold long winters of Sweden have started to feel mysterious and romantic. The Swedish summers too seem far better than the Japanese ones. Actually, I have always liked them but now I like them even more. The long bright nights and the occasionally warm days that never ever becomes too hot now seems like a paradise.
寒く長いスウェーデンの冬が、ロマンティックで不思議な魅力があるように思えてきてたの。スウェーデンの夏も、日本の夏よりだいぶ過ごしやすいと思うわ。もともとスウェーデンの冬も夏も好きなんだけど、今はさらに好きなの。遅くまで明るい夜と、時に暖かくなる昼間は、決して絶対に暑くはならないの。今思うとパラダイスのようね。
Now it sounds like I don’t like Japan, but I do, I really do. I came here in 2008 after I married my boyfriend. I like living in Japan and rarely feel homesick at all, and I feel the same way about Japan when I’m in Sweden. Leaving Sweden though and coming back is always a very sad moment. I have lived abroad before but never longer than a year. During my years here I have experienced so many different feelings and I still am. I think it is something I might never get really used to.
こういうと日本のことが好きじゃないみたいに聞こえるわよね。でも決してそんなことはなくて大好きなのよ。私は2008年にボーイフレンドと結婚した後に日本に来たの。ここで暮らすことが好きだし、まったくホームシックにもならないのよ。スウェーデンにいるときも同じような感覚なの。スウェーデンを離れ、日本に戻る時はとても寂しい気持ちになるの。前に外国で暮らしたこともあったけど、1年以上になることはなかったわ。この日本での時間のなかで、色々なことを感じ、経験したわ。今もね。これはきっと、新しいことに触れ、色々なことを感じることは、これからも慣れないものだと思うわ。
The experience of living here is nothing I would want to be without and I feel that I have learned so much. I have met so many nice and interesting people here and I still think it’s exciting. I feel really lucky to be able to experience both of these worlds.
ここでの経験は、私に必要なものだし、たくさんのことを学んでいる気がするわ。たくさんのすばらしい人たち、面白い人たちに出会ったし、いまだに新しい出会いにわくわくするわ。こんな風にふたつの世界を体験できていることをとても光栄に思っているの。
This Christmas I am going home and will celebrate Christmas with my family. I am really looking forward to this. The main celebration in Sweden is on Christmas Eve, that’s when we eat Christmas dinner and give each other presents. The day before we go out in the forest to get a Christmas tree and on Christmas Eve we dance and sing around it, and, if you did not know it already, Swedes are crazy about singing. There is no festive occasion when we are not singing. Personally I have always liked music so maybe that’s’ why I married a musician, and because he is Japanese is the reason why I am here. : )
今年のクリスマスは、スウェーデンに帰って家族とクリスマスを過ごす予定なの。とても楽しみだわ。
スウェーデンでは、クリスマスイブのお祝いがメインで、クリスマスディナーを食べてお互いにプレゼントをあげるのよ。前日にクリスマスツリーを探しに森に行って、クリスマスイブにはそれを囲んで踊ったり歌ったりするの。知らなかったかもしれないけど、スウェーデン人は歌うことが大好きなのよ。私たちが歌わない祝い事なんかないんだから。個人的にも音楽は大好きで、だからミュージシャンと結婚したのかもね。彼が日本人であることも、私がここにいる理由なの！
