I definitely am!
The new live action Lilo and Stitch movie came out! Have any of you seen it yet?
I watched it last weekend and I loved it!
It was a very heartwarming and endearing film. It hit me with tons of nostalgia and made me miss my Hawaii home a lot.
If any of you enjoy Hawaii or Disney or stories focusing on family, I recommend you to watch it!

もちろん、私は大好き！
最近実写版『リロ＆スティッチ』の新作が公開されたけど、もう観たかしら？
私は先週末に観たんだけど、すっごく良かった！心温まるし、愛があふれてて、懐かしくて、ハワイの家が恋しくなっちゃった。

ハワイやディズニー、家族をテーマにした物語が好きな人には、絶対おすすめしたい作品よ！

Disney played a crucial role in my childhood. When I was little, I often watched Disney movies with my family for movie night, with my sister and/or cousins, or even alone.
ディズニーは、子どもの頃の私にとって、とても大きな存在だったわ。
小さい頃、家族と一緒に映画を楽しむ夜によくディズニー作品を観ていました。姉やいとこたちと一緒だったり、ひとりで観ることもあったのよ。

They taught me valuable life lessons and with the guidance of my parents, I was able to delve deeper into the morals of each story.
Why does Ariel’s daddy not let Ariel go see humans?
Why can’t Jasmine marry Aladdin? They love each other!
Why did Scar do that to Mufasa?!
Why are those girls so mean to Lilo?
These kinds of questions (and more), I would ask my parents as a child and they sometimes answered and sometimes allowed me to think about it myself.
ディズニー映画は、人生で大切なことを教えてくれたの。
そして両親と一緒にその内容について話し合うことで、物語のメッセージをさらに深く理解できるようになったわ。

「なんでアリエルのお父さんは、人間に会いに行くのを許してくれないの？」
「ジャスミンとアラジン、愛し合ってるのに結婚できないのはどうして？」
「スカーはどうしてムファサにあんなことを！？」
「なんであの子たちはリロに意地悪するの？」

子どもの頃の私はこんな質問を親にたくさん投げかけたものだわ。
答えてくれることもあれば、「自分で考えてごらん」と言われることもあった。

When Disney released Lilo and Stitch (2002), my entire family was excited. FINALLY, a Disney film set in Hawaii!
ディズニーが『リロ・アンド・スティッチ』（2002年）を公開したとき、家族全員が大喜びしました。ついにハワイを舞台にしたディズニー映画が登場したんですもの！

I remember my cousins and I lining up to get our tickets, eager to get into the movie theaters to see the film. It was BIG in Hawaii.
The movie theater was packed! My cousins and I had to sit separately due to how full the theater was!
And that film captured our hearts. It was nice to feel seen on our teeny tiny islands in the middle of nowhere. My cousins and I continued to keep up with the Lilo and Stitch story when the Lilo and Stitch series came out.
いとこたちと一緒に映画館に並んで、早く観たくてワクワクしていたのを覚えているわ。ハワイではものすごい人気だったの。
映画館は満員！いとこたちと私は、あまりにも混んでいたので別々に座らなければならないほどだった。
でも、その映画は私たちの心に深く響いたの。どこにでもある小さな島の私たちの存在がちゃんと描かれていることが嬉しかったな。
いとこたちと私は、それからもずっと『リロ・アンド・スティッチ』の物語を追い続けたんです。

I recall in junior high school, the local kumu, (hula) teacher, of our town created a hula dance for the opening song of Lilo and Stitch (He Mele no Lilo) and we danced it for our school’s May Day performance. I think…I still remember that hula dance. Maybe that will be for another blog though, haha.
中学校の頃、地元のクム（フラダンスの先生）が『リロ・アンド・スティッチ』のオープニング曲（He Mele no Lilo）に合わせてフラダンスを作ってくれて、学校のメーデーの発表会で踊ったのを思い出すわ。
あのフラダンスは今でも覚えてるかも。あ、それはまた別のブログで書こうかな、笑。

To this day, Lilo and Stitch remains one of my favorite Disney movies.
When I heard they were making a  live action, I admit, I was skeptical.
I’m glad that I decided to watch it though. While there are several differences from the original 2002 animated movie, I still enjoyed it all the same. The music was great, the characters were endearing, the story was lovely and Stitch was cute and fluffy.
It once again touched my heart and actually made me cry…three times!
I believe, now that I’m older and I’m able to understand more about Nani and Lilo’s situation, the emotions are that much more overwhelming.
今でも『リロ・アンド・スティッチ』は大好きなディズニー映画のひとつです。
実写化されると聞いたとき、正直「うーん、大丈夫かな…」とちょっぴり不安だった。
でも、本当に観て良かったわ。
オリジナルの2002年のアニメ映画とはいくつか違いがあったけれど、それでも十分楽しめたもの。
音楽も良かったし、キャラクターたちも魅力的で、物語も素敵だった。そしてスティッチはやっぱり可愛くてフワフワ！
心がまたキュッと掴まれて、なんと…3回も泣いちゃったの。
年齢を重ねて、ナニとリロの境遇をより深く理解できるようになった今だからこそ、この作品が伝えたいことをより強く感じられるようになったのだと思うわ。

It really shows you just how important your ohana* (family) truly is.
「オハナ（家族）」がどれほど大切かをきちんと教えてくれる映画だわ。
*ohana：血縁関係だけでなく、家族のような絆で結ばれた仲間や、地域社会など、ハワイアンが大切にする人々を指す言葉

In Hawaii (and maybe other parts of the world too), ohana doesn’t need to be blood related, it can also refer to hānai family as well.
Hānai family in Hawaii are people who are not blood related to you but have that kind of strong, familial bond with you and the rest of your family. They may have helped to raise you and spent most of their time with you and your family. They share your table and are always welcome into your home with open arms.
ハワイ（そしておそらく世界の他の地域でも）では、オハナは必ずしも血縁関係に限らず、ハナイ・ファミリー（hānai family）を指すこともあるの。
ハワイにおけるハナイ・ファミリーとは、血縁関係があるかどうかに関わらず、子どもやその家族との間に本当の家族のような強い絆を持ち、子どもを育てたり、その家族と長い付き合いをする人々のことを指すのよ。
ハナイ・ファミリーは、いつでも温かく迎え入れてくれて、一緒に食卓を囲む存在なんです。

We shared this kind of kinship with my grandmother’s neighbor and some of my parent’s best friends. It is a truly lovely bond and I’m lucky that Hawaii has that kind of culture where we can share these kinds of relationships with others who aren’t blood related. In a way…It makes you feel less lonely in the world.
私の家族は、祖母のご近所さんや両親の親友たちと、そんな絆を築いてきたのよ。
それは本当に素敵な絆で、ハワイには血縁関係のない人々ともこのような関係を分かち合える文化があって、私はすごく幸せだわ。
それは、自分が決してひとりじゃないんだと感じさせてくれる優しいつながりだから。

They touch upon this subject in the new Lilo and Stitch movie a lot and I really appreciated that nod to our culture.
With that being said, if you are interested, please feel free to give Lilo and Stitch (2025) a watch! It really explores a beautiful aspect about Hawaiian culture that not many people see when they vacation there: what ohana means to us.
