「違いがある／ない」は英語で？difference・different・make a differenceの違い

「この2つには違いがある」「見た目に違いはない」「少し変えても結果に違いはない」。日本語ではすべて「違い」で表せますが、英語では差が存在するのか、AとBが異なるのか、結果に影響するのかで言い方が変わります。

先に結論を言うと、差の存在なら There is a difference.、AとBが異なるなら A is different from B.、結果に影響するなら It makes a difference. が基本です。「違いがない」も、差がないなら There is no difference.、同じなら They are the same.、結果が変わらないなら It makes no difference. と分けます。

There is a difference：差が「存在する」

There is a difference between A and B. は「AとBの間には違いがある」という基本文型です。違いの大小は big / significant / slight / subtle などで表します。

日常会話では、「違いがない」を否定文で作るより the same で「同じ」と言うほうが簡単なこともあります。

It makes no difference to me. は文脈によって「私はどちらでもいい」です。ただし、言い方によっては無関心に聞こえるため、柔らかくするなら Either option works for me.（どちらでも大丈夫です）が使えます。

違いの存在ではなく、人が見分けられるかを言うときは tell the difference や tell A and B apart を使います。
