regardless ofの意味は？despite・no matterとの違いと使い方・例文

regardless of は、「〜に関係なく」「〜を問わず」という意味の定型表現です。年齢、天候、費用、周囲の意見などを挙げたうえで、その条件は判断や結果に影響しないと伝えます。

たとえば、We’ll go regardless of the weather. は「天気に関係なく行きます」。雨でも晴れでも、行くという決定は変わらない、というニュアンスです。

regardless ofの基本的な意味

regardless of の主な訳し方は次の3つです。

〜に関係なく
〜を問わず
〜にもかかわらず

どの訳が自然かは文脈によって変わりますが、共通する核は「その条件を考慮に入れても、行動・判断・結果は変わらない」です。

Everyone is welcome, regardless of age.
年齢を問わず、どなたでも歓迎します。

She kept working regardless of the noise.
彼女は騒音にかかわらず仕事を続けました。

We support the plan regardless of the outcome.
結果がどうであれ、私たちはその計画を支持します。

なぜ「〜に関係なく」になる？

regard には「注意・考慮」という意味があります。そこに「〜がない」を表す -less がついた regardless は、文字どおりには「考慮しないで」。さらに of の後ろで、考慮しない要素を示します。

つまり、regardless of X = Xを考慮に入れずに という組み立てです。

ただし、実際に人や事情を軽視するとは限りません。「その条件で扱いを変えない」「障害があっても予定を変えない」という公平さや意志の強さを表すことも多いです。

regardless ofの後ろには何を置く？

1．名詞・代名詞

基本形は regardless of + 名詞（代名詞） です。

The fee is the same regardless of your age.
年齢に関係なく料金は同じです。

I’ll stand by you regardless of what happens.
何が起きても、私はあなたの味方です。

代名詞なら目的格を使います。regardless of he ではなく、regardless of him です。

2．動名詞（V-ing）

of は前置詞なので、動作を続ける場合は動詞の原形ではなく V-ing にします。

She applied regardless of feeling nervous.
彼女は緊張を感じながらも応募しました。

ただし、日常英語では regardless of her nervousness や even though she felt nervous のほうが自然になる場合もあります。文法的に作れることと、よく使われる言い方は別だと覚えておきましょう。

3．whether節

「〜かどうかに関係なく」は regardless of whether + 主語 + 動詞 が定番です。

Please reply regardless of whether you can attend.
参加できるかどうかにかかわらず、返信してください。

The event will be held regardless of whether it rains.
雨が降るかどうかに関係なく、イベントは開催されます。

whether の代わりに if を使いたくなるところですが、前置詞 of の直後では whether が安定した選択です。

よく使われる場面と自然な例文

案内・ルール：「条件を問わず」

All employees must complete the training, regardless of position.
役職に関係なく、全従業員が研修を修了しなければなりません。

You can join regardless of your English level.
英語レベルに関係なく参加できます。

仕事：「結果や費用に左右されない」

We need to meet the deadline regardless of the cost.
費用がかかっても、締め切りには間に合わせる必要があります。

この文は強い決意を示しますが、「どれほど費用がかかっても」という極端な響きにもなり得ます。ビジネスでは本当に無条件なのか確認が必要です。

I’ll give you honest feedback regardless of who proposed the idea.
誰がその案を出したかに関係なく、率直な意見を伝えます。

恋愛・人間関係：「何があっても」

I care about you regardless of what others say.
周りが何と言おうと、あなたを大切に思っています。

We should respect each other regardless of our differences.
違いがあっても、お互いを尊重すべきです。

旅行・暮らし：「天候などにかかわらず」

The tour leaves at nine regardless of the weather.
ツアーは天候に関係なく9時に出発します。

Wear sunscreen regardless of the season.
季節を問わず日焼け止めを塗ってください。

despite・no matter・even ifとの違い

regardless of：条件が判断を変えない

We’ll play regardless of the weather.
天候に関係なく試合をします。

晴れ、雨、曇りなどの選択肢をまとめて「どの条件でも同じ」と扱います。

despite / in spite of：障害や予想との対比

We played despite the rain.
雨にもかかわらず試合をしました。

despite the rain は、雨という具体的な障害があったのに実行した、という対比に焦点があります。対して regardless of the weather は、天候そのものを決定条件にしない響きです。

no matter：会話でよく使う「何が〜でも」

We’ll go no matter what the weather is like.
どんな天気でも行きます。

no matter の後ろには what / who / where / how / whether などを伴う節がよく続きます。意味は近いですが、regardless of より会話的です。

even if：仮定の「たとえ〜でも」

We’ll go even if it rains.
たとえ雨が降っても行きます。

even if は、まだ起きたと決まっていない状況を仮定します。regardless of は「どの条件になっても決定は同じ」という広い言い方です。

irrespective of：よりフォーマル

The rule applies irrespective of nationality.
その規則は国籍を問わず適用されます。

irrespective of は regardless of とほぼ同じですが、法律・規則・正式な文書で見かけやすい硬めの表現です。

regardless toとは言わない

irregardlessは避けるのが安全

irregardless は実際に使われることがありますが、非標準的だと見なされたり、くどい形だと批判されたりします。特に学習者や正式な文章では、標準的な regardless を使うのが安全です。

強すぎる印象に注意する

I’ll do it regardless of your opinion. は「あなたの意見に関係なくやる」と、相手の意見を切り捨てる強い言い方です。意見は聞くが最終判断は変わらない、と柔らかく伝えたいなら、次のように補足できます。

I value your opinion, but I think I need to do this.
あなたの意見は大切にしていますが、これはやる必要があると思います。

すぐ出てこないときの簡単な言い換え

regardless of が出てこなくても、中学英語で十分伝えられます。

It doesn’t matter if it rains.
雨が降っても問題ではありません。
We will go even if it rains.
雨が降っても行きます。
Everyone can join.
