along withの意味は？together with・as well asとの違いと使い方

along withは、「〜と一緒に」「〜に加えて」を表す英語表現です。

She came along with her sister.なら「彼女は妹と一緒に来た」、The package includes a charger along with the phone.なら「その商品にはスマートフォンに加えて充電器も含まれる」です。

alongには「線や流れに沿って進む」、withには「一緒に」という感覚があります。along withは、中心となる人・物の流れに、別の人・物が付き添って進むイメージです。

単に二者を対等に並べる場合もありますが、多くの場合は「中心となるもの＋それに付いてくるもの」という軽い主従関係があります。

along withは、Aという本流にBが合流する感覚です。AとBを完全に対等に並べるandとは、情報の見せ方が少し違います。

along withの2つの意味

1．人と「一緒に・連れ立って」

人や動物が同じ場所へ行く、同じ活動に参加する場面で使います。

Can I come along with you?
あなたと一緒に行ってもいいですか？

She brought her daughter along with her.
彼女は娘を連れてきました。

Several coworkers came along with the manager.
マネージャーと一緒に同僚数名も来ました。

この意味では、日常会話でcome along withやbring someone alongの形がよく使われます。

2．物・情報を「〜に加えて・〜とともに」

中心となる物事に別の要素が追加されるときに使います。

Please send your résumé along with a cover letter.
履歴書に加えてカバーレターも送ってください。

The rent includes water along with internet access.
家賃には水道代に加えてインターネット料金も含まれています。

Exercise, along with a balanced diet, can improve your health.

A along with Bの動詞は単数？複数？

ここは学習者が特に迷いやすい点です。A along with Bでは、文法上の主語の中心はAです。したがって、動詞は原則としてAの単数・複数に合わせます。

The manager, along with two assistants, was present.
マネージャーはアシスタント2名とともに出席していました。

最初の2文はAが単数なのでis・was、最後はAが複数なのでareです。Bが複数でも、動詞をBに引っ張られないようにしましょう。

along withは文のどこに置く？

名詞の直後に置くほか、追加情報として文頭や文中に置けます。

文中に挿入する場合は、カンマで区切ると中心の主語が見えやすくなります。

along withとtogether withの違い

どちらも「〜と一緒に」で、多くの場面で置き換えられます。

andでは複数主語なのでare、along withでは中心のAnnaに合わせてisです。対等に扱いたい相手をalong withの後ろに置くと、脇役のように響く場合があるため注意しましょう。

get along withとは意味が違う

get along withは一まとまりで「人と仲良くやる・うまく付き合う」という句動詞です。

人や物を後ろに続けるときはwithが必要です。

ただし、Come along!（一緒に来て）のように目的語を置かない場合はalongだけで使えます。

前置詞withの後ろには名詞・代名詞・動名詞を置きます。
