in spite ofの意味は？despite・althoughとの違いと使い方を例文解説

in spite of は「〜にもかかわらず」「〜なのに」という意味です。予想なら悪い結果になりそうな事情があるのに、それとは反対のことが起きたときに使います。

たとえば、雨が降っているのに出かけたなら、We went out in spite of the rain. と言えます。ポイントは、in spite of の後ろには基本的に名詞・代名詞・動名詞（-ing）を置くことです。

in spite ofの意味を最初に確認

in spite of の基本的な意味は、次の2つです。

〜にもかかわらず
〜なのに、〜をものともせず

She smiled in spite of the pain.
彼女は痛みにもかかわらず笑顔を見せました。

In spite of the traffic, we arrived on time.
渋滞にもかかわらず、私たちは時間どおりに着きました。

どちらも「痛みがあれば笑顔になりにくい」「渋滞なら遅れそうだ」という予想があります。しかし実際には、その予想と反対の結果になっています。

in spite of は、単に二つの事実を並べる表現ではありません。「普通ならそうならないはずなのに」という意外性を含むのがポイントです。

なぜ「〜にもかかわらず」になるの？

spite には単独では「悪意」「意地悪」という意味があります。ただし、現代英語の in spite of は3語で一つの前置詞句として覚えるのが実用的です。

感覚としては、ある事情が結果を邪魔しようとしているのに、その事情を押し切って結果が成立するイメージです。

He kept working in spite of his fever.
彼は熱があるにもかかわらず仕事を続けました。

「熱がある」という障害があっても、「仕事を続けた」という結果は変わりません。この逆風と結果の組み合わせが、in spite of の中心的な感覚です。

in spite ofの語順とよく使う形

1．in spite of + 名詞

最も基本的な形です。

We had a great trip in spite of the bad weather.
悪天候にもかかわらず、すばらしい旅行になりました。

In spite of her busy schedule, Maya joined us for dinner.
忙しい予定にもかかわらず、マヤは夕食に参加してくれました。

文頭に置く場合は、後ろにコンマを置くと読みやすくなります。

2．in spite of + 代名詞

I went ahead with the plan in spite of them.
彼らの反対にもかかわらず、私は計画を進めました。

of は前置詞なので、後ろは they ではなく目的格の them です。

3．in spite of + 動名詞（-ing）

動作を続けたいときは、動詞を -ing 形にします。

In spite of feeling nervous, I gave the presentation.
緊張していたにもかかわらず、私はプレゼンをしました。

She bought the dress in spite of knowing it was expensive.
高いと分かっていたのに、彼女はそのドレスを買いました。

4．in spite of the fact that + 文

in spite of の直後に「主語＋動詞」の文を置きたい場合は、the fact that を挟みます。

In spite of the fact that it was late, nobody wanted to leave.
遅い時間だったにもかかわらず、誰も帰りたがりませんでした。

ただし、この形は少し長く硬めです。会話なら、後で説明する although や even though のほうがすっきりすることも多いです。

We ate outside in spite of the cold.
寒かったにもかかわらず、私たちは外で食事をしました。

He slept well in spite of the noise upstairs.
上の階がうるさかったのに、彼はよく眠れました。

In spite of the short notice, the team finished the report.
急な依頼にもかかわらず、チームは報告書を完成させました。

The meeting went well in spite of a few technical problems.

恋愛・人間関係

In spite of our differences, we get along really well.
違いはあるものの、私たちはとても仲良くやっています。

In spite of missing the first train, we made our flight.
始発電車に乗り遅れたにもかかわらず、飛行機には間に合いました。

in spite ofとdespiteの違い

in spite of と despite は、意味も使い方もほぼ同じです。

We went hiking in spite of the rain.
We went hiking despite the rain.
雨にもかかわらず、私たちはハイキングに行きました。

主な違いは形です。

in spite of：3語で、of が必要
despite：1語で、後ろに of を付けない

despite は少し簡潔に見えますが、どちらも会話・文章の両方で自然です。「in spite of のほうが強い」と説明されることもありますが、通常の文では大きな意味の差を意識する必要はありません。

although・even thoughとの違い

意味は似ていますが、後ろに続く形が違います。

even though は、although より「それなのに」という意外性を強く感じさせる傾向があります。

in spite ofとin the face ofの違い

in spite of は、予想に反する結果を幅広く表します。一方、in the face of は、困難・危険・反対などに正面から向き合う感覚が強い表現です。

She succeeded in spite of several setbacks.
何度か挫折したにもかかわらず、彼女は成功しました。

She remained calm in the face of danger.
危険に直面しても、彼女は冷静さを保ちました。

間違い1：in spite ofの後ろに文をそのまま置く

× In spite of it was raining, we went out.

次のどちらかに直します。

○ In spite of the rain, we went out.
○ Although it was raining, we went out.

間違い2：despite ofと言う

× despite of the rain
○ despite the rain
○ in spite of the rain

in spite of には of がありますが、despite に of は付けません。

間違い3：butと重ねる

× In spite of the rain, but we went out.

○ In spite of the rain, we went out.
○ It was raining, but we went out.

in spite of だけで対立関係を示せるため、同じ文の接続に but を重ねる必要はありません。

難しければ簡単な英語で言い換えよう

in spite of がすぐに出てこなくても、二つの短い文を but でつなげば十分伝わります。

In spite of being tired, I went to the gym.
疲れていたにもかかわらず、ジムへ行きました。

これを簡単にすると：

I was tired, but I went to the gym.
疲れていましたが、ジムへ行きました。

In spite of the high price, I bought it.
値段が高かったにもかかわらず、私はそれを買いました。

簡単にすると：

It was expensive, but I bought it.
高かったですが、買いました。

伝えたい中心は「悪い条件があった。でも結果はこうだった」です。難しい表現を思い出せないときは、まず二文に分けてみましょう。
