check againstは、「原本・記録・基準などと照合する」「突き合わせて正しいか確認する」という意味です。

請求書の数字を発注書と照合するなら、I checked the invoice against the purchase order. と言えます。日本語では単に「確認する」と言うこともありますが、check againstには比較の基準となるものを横に置き、一致しているか確かめる感覚があります。

againstの後ろには基準を置く

check A against BのBは、確認したいAではなく、Aを比べる基準です。「請求書を発注書と照合する」なら、invoiceがA、purchase orderがBです。

人に確認する意味では使わない

上司に聞いて確認するならcheck with my bossです。check against my bossでは、上司を比較基準にするような不自然な意味になります。

単に「確認する」だけならagainstは不要

I checked the email.なら「メールを確認した」です。別の資料と突き合わせたことを言いたいときにagainstを加えます。
