There is no question of doingの意味は？語順とno question thatとの違い

There is no question of doing は、「〜する可能性はない」「〜することは考えられない」という意味です。

ここでの question は「質問」ではなく、検討される可能性・選択肢を表します。つまり、「その行動は検討の対象にすらならない」という強い否定です。

There is no question of canceling the event.
イベントを中止する可能性はありません。
There was no question of us leaving early.
私たちが早く帰ることは考えられませんでした。

似た形の There is no question that S + V は「〜なのは間違いない」という意味です。of doing と that節 では意味の方向が違うため、この記事で語順と使い分けを整理します。

There is no question of doingの意味

There is no question of A は、「Aの可能性はない」「Aは選択肢にならない」という意味です。Aに動作を置くときは、of + 動名詞（-ing） にします。

There is no question of postponing the launch again.
発売をもう一度延期するという選択肢はありません。

単に「たぶん起きない」と予測するのではなく、話し手があり得ない・認められない・検討しないと強く線を引く響きがあります。

questionを「質問」と訳すと分かりにくくなります。ここでは「検討すべき可能性・選択肢」と考えましょう。「その選択肢はない」と捉えると自然です。

語順はThere is no question of + 動名詞

基本形は次の通りです。

There is no question of + 名詞 / 動名詞

There is no question of a refund.
返金の可能性はありません。
There is no question of changing the deadline.
締め切りを変更することは考えられません。

前置詞 of の後ろなので、動詞の原形やto不定詞ではなく -ing形 を置きます。

○ There is no question of moving.
× There is no question of move.
× There is no question of to move.

意味上の主語を入れる形

「誰がする可能性もないのか」を示すときは、動名詞の前に所有格や目的格を置けます。

There is no question of my accepting those terms.
私がその条件を受け入れることはあり得ません。
There was no question of them traveling in that weather.
あの天候で彼らが移動することは考えられませんでした。

会話では me accepting、them traveling のような目的格もよく使われます。文章では my accepting のような所有格がやや整った響きです。

no question of doingとno question thatの違い

There is no question of doing：する可能性はない

There is no question of closing the store.
その店を閉める可能性はありません。

closingという行動が、現実的な選択肢に入っていないという意味です。

There is no question that S + V：〜なのは間違いない

There is no question that the store needs help.
その店に支援が必要なのは間違いありません。

that節の内容には疑いがなく、確実だと述べています。

no question of doing：その行動は起きない・選択肢にない
no question that S + V：that以下の事実に疑いがない

There is no question aboutとの違い

There is no question about A は、「Aについて疑いはない」という意味です。可能性を否定する of doing とは異なります。

There is no question about her ability.
彼女の能力について疑いはありません。

There is no question of hiring anyone this month.
今月誰かを採用する可能性はありません。

aboutの後ろは「疑いのない対象」、ofの後ろは「実現しない行動・選択肢」と整理できます。

out of the questionとの違い

out of the question も「問題外・不可能」を表します。

There is no question of doing：やや改まった説明調で、可能性・方針を否定する
out of the question：会話でも使いやすく、「絶対無理」と強く拒否する

Working this weekend is out of the question.
今週末に働くなんて絶対に無理です。

There is no question of asking the team to work this weekend.
チームに今週末働いてもらうという選択肢はありません。

no doubtとの違い

no doubt は「疑いなく・おそらく」を表し、基本的に内容の確かさへ注目します。

She will no doubt succeed.
彼女はきっと成功するでしょう。

There is no question of her giving up now.
彼女が今あきらめることはあり得ません。

日本人が間違えやすいポイント

「質問がない」と直訳しない

このquestionは尋ねる文のことではありません。「可能性・検討事項」の意味です。

ofの後ろに原形を置かない

ofは前置詞なので、行動には動名詞を使います。of do や of to do にはしません。

no question thatと混同しない

no question of doing は行動の可能性を否定し、no question that は事実を強く肯定します。no questionという部分だけを見ず、その後ろまで確認しましょう。
