be acquainted with は、人について「面識がある・知り合いである」、物事について「ある程度知っている」という意味です。
代表例は I’m acquainted with her.（彼女とは面識があります）。ただし、親しい友人だという意味ではありません。顔や名前を知っていて、何度か話したことがある程度にも使えます。

be acquainted withの基本的な意味
acquaint は「人に情報を知らせる」「人を何かに慣れさせる」という動詞です。通常は受け身の be acquainted with … という形で使われ、直訳すると「〜と知り合いにされた状態」「〜について知らされた状態」になります。
そこから、主に次の二つの意味で使われます。
- 人と面識がある・知り合いである
- 物事について知識がある・事情を知っている

人が目的語の場合、会ったことがある、紹介されたことがある、ある程度の交流があるという意味です。
I became acquainted with Emma through a mutual friend.
共通の友人を通じてエマと知り合いました。
We’re acquainted, but we don’t know each other well.
私たちは知り合いですが、お互いをよく知っているわけではありません。
She is acquainted with several people in the publishing industry.
彼女は出版業界に何人か知り合いがいます。
become acquainted with 人 なら「人と知り合いになる」、get acquainted with 人 なら「人と知り合う・交流して相手を知っていく」という変化を表せます。
物事に使うbe acquainted with｜「知識がある」
制度、事情、方法、作品などが目的語の場合は、「〜についてある程度知っている」「〜の知識がある」という意味になります。

基本的な規則は知っています。

be well acquainted with とすると「よく知っている・精通している」と知識の深さが増します。なお、命令や依頼で使う acquaint yourself with … はかなり改まった表現です。

know は関係の深さが文脈次第です。一方、be acquainted with は「少なくとも面識はある」という少し控えめで客観的な言い方です。
物事について話す場合
I’m acquainted with the software.
そのソフトについて多少知識があります。
I’m familiar with the software.
そのソフトをよく知っていて、扱いにも慣れています。
be familiar with のほうが、実際に触れた経験や慣れを感じさせやすい表現です。職場で「使えます」と伝えたいなら、多くの場合はこちらが自然です。
文法と文中での位置
- 主語 + be acquainted with + 人／物
- become / get acquainted with + 人／物
- acquaint oneself with + 物
with の後ろには名詞・代名詞・動名詞を置けます。
He is acquainted with working under pressure. は文法的には作れますが、「プレッシャー下で働くことに慣れている」なら通常は He is used to working under pressure. のほうが自然です。何でも be acquainted with に置き換えないようにしましょう。

get better acquainted は少し古風で上品な響きがあり、文脈によっては恋愛的な関心もにじみます。現代の日常会話で自然に言うなら、I’d like to get to know you better. が定番です。

丁寧さ・硬さ・失礼になる場面
be acquainted with は失礼な表現ではありませんが、日常会話ではやや距離を感じさせます。親しい人を an acquaintance や someone I’m acquainted with と呼ぶと、「友達ではなく、ただの知り合い」と線を引いているように聞こえることがあります。

日本人が間違えやすいポイント
「親しい」とは限らない
We are acquainted. は「私たちは親しい」ではなく、「面識がある・知り合いである」です。親しい友人なら We’re close friends. を使います。
人に対するbe familiar withは注意
I’m familiar with her. は、人柄や仕事ぶりをよく知っているという文脈なら使えますが、単に「彼女と知り合いです」と言いたいなら I know her. または I’m acquainted with her. が明確です。
会話で無理に使わない
「このシステムを知っています」は、多くの職場で Do you know this system? や Are you familiar with this system? のほうが自然です。be acquainted with は、改まった説明や文章で特に役立つ表現だと考えましょう。
