Take care of yourself by Christa

Hello “b” members! I hope all of you had a wonderful Silver Week and are enjoying the cooler weather!

Today I’d like to talk a little about self-care. Do you practice good self-care in your day-to-day life? Self-care means taking time to let yourself rest, recharge, and treat yourself well. This includes things like getting a massage, getting a facial or other spa treatment, or even sitting down and reading your favorite book.

However, Tokyo life can be very busy, so most of us can’t make the time to do the things above. Even so, there are some small things that you can do every day to cheer yourself up and relieve stress! Below are some suggestions:

After you wake up, light some incense or aroma oils. Scents can have a very powerful affect on a person’s mood. Enjoying the scent while you are getting ready for work can be very therapeutic. Grapefruit is good for happiness and alertness, while lavender is good for relaxation.

Take a few deep breaths while at your desk. Breathe from your abdomen and not your chest. This has a powerful calming effect.

Buy yourself some flowers. I have recently started doing this. Once a week I stop by a florist and pick out some roses. Each time, I pick colors that appeal to me that day. I put them in a vase and display them where I can easily see them. When I wake up in the morning and when I come home at night, the bright colors of the roses are the first thing I see, and I smile instantly.

Instead of getting off at your usual station, get off one station before or after, and walk to your office. The morning air will refresh you, you will get exercise, and perhaps even discover a new shop that you didn’t know about!

Most of all, I recommend at least taking 10 minutes a day and doing something nice for yourself. In order to give 100% at work and 100% to your family, you first must make sure you have given 100% to yourself.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me during our next lesson! Also, if you have other ideas for self-care, please share them with me. I look forward to seeing you soon!
