Why People are Obsessed with Japanese Authors Right Now
なぜ今、日本の作家が世界中で注目されているの？

I hope everyone is enjoying summer vacation! But to be honest, I’m not. I like sunny days, but recently it’s been too hot. The heat is crazy. I don’t want to go outside at all. So, let’s stay inside and read some books.
夏休み、みんな満喫してるといいな～。
私はというと……うーん、正直あんまり楽しめてないかも。
晴れた日は好きなんだけど、最近は暑すぎて。
本当にもう、外に出る気にもなれないくらいの暑さ。
だからこそ、こんなときはおうち時間。本の世界にひたってみませんか？

If you go to the English section of a big bookstore in Japan, you will see many famous books from English-speaking countries. You can also find some books written by foreigners about Japan, often for tourists. But recently, something interesting has happened. More and more Japanese books, written by Japanese authors, are being translated into English and sold around the world.
日本の大きな書店の洋書コーナーに行くと、英語圏の有名な本がずらりと並んでいます。
また、外国人が日本について書いた、観光客向けの本もよく見かけます。
でも、最近ちょっと面白い変化が起きているのよ。
日本人作家による日本語の本が、どんどん英語に翻訳されて、世界中で読まれるようになってきたの！

This is part of Japan’s “soft power.” Many people already love Japanese anime, manga, and food. Now, Japanese books are becoming popular too, not just in Japan, but overseas.
この現象は、日本の「ソフトパワー（＝文化・価値観・魅力によって人の心を動かす力）」のひとつと言えるかも。
アニメやマンガ、和食には、以前から世界中にたくさんのファンがいますよね。
そして今、日本の書籍も海を越えて、海外でますます人気を集めているのよ。

One popular writer is Banana Yoshimoto. Her book Kitchen was first published in 1988, but now it is popular again. The English version has a bright pink cover.If you look at “BookTok” – a community on TikTok where people share book recommendations – you can find Kitchen again and again. I saw it on BookTok too. The cover was so bright, and the name “Banana” was so interesting, that I bought the book without knowing anything about the story.
人気作家のひとりが吉本ばななさん。彼女の著書『キッチン』は1988年に初版が出版されましたが、今また注目を集めています。
英語版は、目を引く鮮やかなピンク色の表紙。
TikTokでおすすめの本を紹介し合う「BookTok」というコミュニティでは、『キッチン』が何度も何度も登場していて、私もそこで見かけたの。
表紙のインパクトと、「Banana」というユニークな名前に惹かれて、ストーリーの内容を知らないまま、思わず買っちゃった。

Many English versions of Japanese books now have very bright and colorful covers.
Mieko Kawakami’s books are a good example. Her book covers use bold colors and beautiful designs, so they catch your eye on the bookshelf or on your phone. Sometimes people buy the book just because of the cover!
最近の日本の本の英語版は、とてもカラフルで、思わず目を奪われるような表紙が多いんです。
たとえば、川上未映子さんの作品はまさにその代表例。
英語版の表紙は、大胆な色づかいと美しいデザインが印象的で、本屋の棚でもスマホの画面でもパッと目を引きます。
その魅力にひかれて、“表紙買い”しちゃう人も少なくないんです！

But these books are not only popular because of the design. I think the stories are also very different from popular English books.Many Japanese stories use a writing style that fans overseas call “slice of life.” This means the story is about everyday life. Nothing very big happens, but the small details feel emotional and real.
でも、こうした本が人気なのは、表紙のデザインだけが理由じゃないんです。
私が思うに、ストーリー自体が英語圏の本とはちょっと違う魅力を持っているからだと思います。
日本の小説は、海外のファンの間で「スライス・オブ・ライフ」と呼ばれる文体で描かれていることが多いんです。
「スライス・オブ・ライフ」とは、大きな事件は起きないけれど、日常の中の小さな出来事や感情を丁寧に描いていく物語のこと。
何か特別なことがあるわけじゃない。
でも、さりげない描写がじんわりと心に響いて、「ああ、わかるな」って思える。
そんなリアルさが、多くの読者の心をつかんでいるのかもしれません。

The characters might go shopping, eat dinner, or just talk, but readers feel connected. It’s peaceful, slow, and emotional. This is different from many popular English books, which often have a lot of action or dramatic events.
登場人物たちは、ただ買い物に行ったり、夕ごはんを食べたり、なんとなくおしゃべりしたり――
そんな何気ない日常を過ごしているだけなのに、読者はどこかで心を通わせているような感覚になるんです。
静かで、ゆっくりとしていて、そしてどこか心にしみる。
これは、アクションや大きなドラマが展開する英語圏の人気作品とはまた違った魅力があります。

Also, many of these books are written by women and focus on women’s daily life and feelings. Authors like Sayaka Murata, Banana Yoshimoto, and Mieko Kawakami write about what it’s like to be a woman in Japan. Many women overseas can understand and feel close to these stories, even if the culture is different. Because most readers are women, this connection helps these books become popular.
それに、こうした作品の多くは女性作家によって書かれていて、女性の日常や気持ちに寄り添ったテーマが描かれているんです。
たとえば、村田沙耶香さん、吉本ばななさん、川上未映子さんの作品には、「日本で女性として生きること」がさまざまな角度から描かれています。

文化や社会背景は違っていても、海外の女性たちもその感情や体験に共感し、物語にぐっと引き込まれていくのです。
そして、読者の多くが女性であるからこそ、その“共感”が人気の広がりを後押ししているのかもしれません。
