Tokyo Tower and London Tea by Amie

Hi everyone, this is Amie. Hope you’re enjoying the brief autumn before winter lands.
Last week, I welcomed my one year anniversary of living in Japan, and I’ve decided to celebrate with something a little closer to home: afternoon tea.

冬の足音が近づくなか、みなさんは束の間の秋を楽しんでいるかしら？

先週、私は日本に暮らし始めてちょうど1年を迎えたのよ。
そのささやかな記念に、少し“故郷の気分”を感じられるアフタヌーンティーでお祝いすることにしました。

I’m a frequent visitor of teahouses back in London. It’s often been the background for my girls-talk, whether it’s gossip or more serious topics we’d always do it over tea. I suppose that’s what popularised afternoon tea in the first place! And since afternoon tea is one of London’s many postcards, we certainly don’t go half-arsed.
ロンドンに住んでいた頃は、よくティーハウス（お茶を楽しむためのカフェ）に通っていたの。
友達とのガールズトークは、いつもここが定番。
ちょっとしたゴシップでも、真面目な相談でも、お茶を片手にゆっくり話し込んでいたわ。
そんな“お茶の時間”を通して、アフタヌーンティーという文化が根づいたのかもしれないわね。
それに、アフタヌーンティーはロンドン名物のひとつだから、私たちは絶対に手抜きなんてしないのよ！

Many teahouses create themed courses promoting their main feature, like The Shard and The Library at Big Ben, while others change their menu on a monthly bias. It can really be quite baffling to choose sometimes! My personal favourite however, will always be Fortnum Mason, they have my heart with their Rose Pouchong tea.
ロンドンには、テーマに沿ってアフタヌーンティーを出すティーハウスがたくさんあって、
たとえば「ザ・シャード（ロンドンを代表する超高層ビル）」や、「ビッグベンの図書館（ビッグベンの“架空の図書館”をイメージ）」をモチーフにしたコースもあるの。
毎月メニューが変わるお店もあって、どこに行こうか迷ってしまうこともよくあるわ！
でも、私のいちばんのお気に入りは、やっぱりフォートナム＆メイソン。
とくに「Rose Pouchong tea（ローズ・プーチョンティー）」というフレーバーの紅茶が、もうたまらなく大好き！

I was so excited when I found this restaurant in Tokyo and I clicked the ‘confirm booking’ button faster than I can realise! It was everything I would ever want from afternoon tea, served with the best view of my new home city.
東京でこのレストランを見つけたときは、本当に大興奮で、気づいたらあっという間に「予約確定」ボタンを押していたの！
ここは、私がアフタヌーンティーに求めるものが全部そろっているだけじゃなくて、今の私が暮らす街を一望できる、最高の景色までついてきたのよ。

My partner and I were welcomed with champagne as we sat to take in the scenery. Shortly after, a cake tower crowned with gem-like delights was brought forth. The top layer was decorated with sweet treats and in the middle, a chocolate plate with the title of celebration. The restaurant swapped the traditional sandwich layer with savouries of Anglo-Japanese fusion. The maitake cheese tart was out of this world! The creamy cheese married so well with the earthiness of the mushroom, it was so good I had to steal my partner’s portion!
席に案内されて腰を落ち着けた瞬間、私とパートナーにはまずシャンパンが一杯ふるまわれ、その景色と一緒にゆっくりと乾杯を楽しんだの。
ほどなくして、宝石みたいなお菓子が並んだケーキタワーが登場。
一番上の段には可愛らしいスイーツが並び、真ん中にはお祝いの言葉が書かれたチョコレートプレートが飾られていたわ。
そして何より驚いたのは、伝統的なサンドイッチの段が、「英国×日本」のセイボリーにアレンジされていたこと。
とくに、舞茸のチーズタルトはまさに絶品！
濃厚なチーズと、舞茸の香ばしい旨みが驚くほどよく合っていて、あまりの美味しさに、思わずパートナーの分までつまんじゃったほどよ。

Moving on to the star of the show, scones. Aside from London, I would also spend a lot of time staying at my country house in Devon, where scones originate from. They are a quick way to my heart. We were served Apple and Black Tea Scones as it was the autumn menu. One bite, I was happily home in the British countryside. One complaint though, we need more clotted cream!
そしていよいよ、お待ちかねの主役──スコーン。
ロンドンだけじゃなく、スコーン発祥の地デヴォンにあるカントリーハウスにもよく通っていた私は、スコーンさえあればもう大満足なの。
この日は秋のメニューということで、アップル＆ブラックティーのスコーンが出てきて、
ひと口食べた瞬間、まるでイギリスの田舎に帰ってきたような、あの懐かしい幸せが一気にふわっと広がったわ。
ただひとつだけ言わせて……クロテッドクリームが足りなかったのぉ！

Overall, it was a fantastic way to celebrate my first year in Japan. Here’s to many more!
