Happy Holidays, everyone! It’s now December, and Christmas and New Year’s are coming up soon. In the US, we call the period from late October through early January “The Holidays” because there are so many special events: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s, etc.

今年もいよいよ12月に入り、クリスマスやお正月が近づいてきましたね。
アメリカでは、10月の終わりから1月のはじめまでを「ホリデーシーズン（The Holidays）」と呼ぶのよ。

それは、この時期に特別なイベントがたくさんあるからなの。
ハロウィン、サンクスギビング（感謝祭）、クリスマス、ハヌカ、クワンザ、そしてニューイヤー（お正月）と、にぎやかなお祝いが続くんです。

My family’s tradition is to have Thanksgiving late lunch, around 2-3pm, and after resting for a bit, setting up and decorating the Christmas tree together.
私の家では、毎年、サンクスギビングの日は午後2時から3時ごろに少し遅めのランチをいただくのがお決まりなの。
そのあと少し休んでから、家族みんなでクリスマスツリーを飾るのが恒例行事なんです。

It’s important to not decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving! Here’s our tree from a couple of years ago.
アメリカでは、サンクスギビングが終わるまではクリスマスの飾りつけをしないことが大事なんです。
こちらは、何年か前のわが家のツリーです。

Now that I live alone in Japan, I often miss my family around this season. To help me feel more at home, I have TWO Christmas trees! This year, I’m trying to decide how I want to decorate them. Should I buy new ornaments, or maybe try to make some? These are the things I’m thinking about right now.
今は日本でひとり暮らしをしているので、この季節になると家族が恋しくなっちゃうわ。
そんな気持ちを少しでも和らげるために、クリスマスツリーを2本も飾っているのよ。

今年は、その2つをどう飾ろうかな〜と悩み中。
新しいオーナメントを買おうかしら？それとも手作りしてみようかな？
最近はそんなことを考えているわ。

The Japanese winter tradition seems to be having outdoor Christmas/Winter/Holiday lights, aka “Illuminations”. Did you know this is a wasei-eigo (和製英語) katakana word? In the US, we would often call these just Christmas lights, or “lights”.
日本の冬といえば、街中にきらめくクリスマスやウィンターシーズンのイルミネーションが定番ですよね。
この “イルミネーション” という言葉、実は和製英語って知っていましたか？

アメリカでは、こういう光の装飾を「クリスマスライツ（Christmas lights）」とか簡単に「lights（ライツ）」と呼んでいるのよ。
