A Cozy Winter Anime Recommendation: Love Through a Prism by Chel’C

These days have been quite chilly, haven’t they?
I try my best to not be lazy and force myself to go outside, however, there are days when I fail to do so. During such days, I like to curl up in my blanket and watch a movie or binge-watch anime.

最近、かなり冷え込む日が続いているわよね。
できるだけ怠けないようにして、無理やりでも外に出るように頑張っているのだけれど、どうしてもできない日もあるの。

そんな日は、毛布にくるまって映画を観たり、アニメを一気見したりして過ごすのが好きなのよ。

A week ago, I found a Netflix anime series called Love Through a Prism (プリズム輪舞曲). It was created by Yoko Kamio, the author of Boys Over Flowers (花より団子), which piqued my interest.
Long story short: I fell in love with it.
1週間ほど前に、Netflixで『Love Through a Prism（プリズム輪舞曲）』というアニメシリーズを見つけたの。
『花より団子』の作者として知られる神尾葉子さんの作品だと知って、思わず興味が沸いたわ。
結局のところ、すっかりハマってしまったの。

It takes place in the early 1900s. The story follows Lili, an aspiring artist from Yokohama, Japan, who wishes to study art at Saint Thomas Academy in London. She makes a deal with her disapproving mother. If she is able to become the number 1 student at her school within 6 months, she will be allowed to stay in London and pursue her art career. If she can’t, she’ll have to return to Japan, give up on her art dreams and take over her family’s kimono shop.
物語の舞台は、1900年代初頭。
日本の横浜出身で、画家を目指す少女リリが主人公。
彼女はロンドンにあるセント・トーマス・アカデミーで美術を学ぶことを夢見ているの。

けれど、その夢に反対する母親と、ある条件付きの約束を交わすことになるの。
それは、6か月以内に学校でトップの成績を収めることができたら、ロンドンに残って芸術の道に進んでいいというもの。

もし達成できなければ、日本に帰国し、絵の夢を諦めて、家業である呉服店を継ぐことになるのよ。

Despite the short amount of time, Lili accepts the wager and journeys to London. She meets Saint Thomas Academy’s number 1 student, Kit Church. A gifted artist, he possesses amazing technique and his abilities seem to come easily to him. His art is breathtaking and she admires everything about it. Kit, on the other hand, is a different story. He isn’t at all what she imagined a top student to be. He is messy, laidback, eccentric and inconsiderate. She simply cannot stand him! (But we all know where that is heading…haha)
限られた時間しかないと分かっていながらも、リリはその賭けを受け入れ、ロンドンへと旅立つの。
そこで出会うのが、セント・トーマス・アカデミーで現在トップの成績を誇る生徒、キット・チャーチよ。

彼は生まれながらの才能を持つ画家で、卓越した技術を備えていて、すべてがいとも簡単にできてしまうように見えるの。
彼の作品は息をのむほど美しくて、リリはそのすべてに心を奪われてしまうわ。

でもね、キット本人となると話は別なのよ。
リリが想像していた「優等生」とはまったく違って、だらしなくて、マイペースで、風変わりで、おまけに無神経。
とにかく、どうしても好きになれない相手なの！

……とはいえ、この先どうなるかは、もうお察しよね（笑）

The characters are fun! Lili is a very likeable main character. You can’t help but cheer for her. The relationships she builds and friendships she grows with those around her is also endearing to watch.
登場人物たちが面白いの！
リリはとても魅力的な主人公で、思わず応援したくなってしまう存在よ。

彼女が周囲の人たちと築いていく人間関係や、少しずつ深まっていく友情も、見ていてとても微笑ましいの。

The story is quite easy to follow. It is sweet and cozy, filling you with warmth and inspiration. As an artist myself, I related a lot to this anime. It shows the struggles artists go through as we try to find our inner creativity, but it also shows the euphoria we feel when our art shines through. It was a nice thing to see in an anime.
物語の展開もとても分かりやすくて、終始すっと入り込めるの。
甘くて、どこかほっとする雰囲気があって、観ていると心がじんわり温まって、前向きな気持ちにさせてくれる作品よ。

私自身もアーティストだから、このアニメには共感する部分がとても多かったの。
自分の内側にある創造性を見つけようと模索する苦しさや葛藤、そして作品を通してそれが一気に花開いたときの高揚感。
そんなアーティストならではの想いが丁寧に描かれていて、それをアニメで観られたのが、とても素敵だと感じたわ。

If you like art, drama, fun characters, the UK, beautiful backgrounds/landscapes and the infamous rivals to lovers trope, you’ll probably enjoy this anime.
アートやドラマが好きな方、魅力的なキャラクターに惹かれる方、
そしてイギリスの雰囲気や美しい背景・風景が好きな方には、きっと楽しんでいただけるアニメだと思うわ。

さらに、「ライバルから恋へ…」という王道の展開が好きな方なら、なおさらおすすめよ。
