Mascot characters are everywhere in Japan. There are so many of them, and they help promote local tourism, as well as companies and products.

日本では本当にたくさんのゆるキャラを見かけますよね。
いろいろなキャラクターがいて、観光地をPRしたり、企業や商品を紹介したりと大活躍しています。
みなさんには、お気に入りのマスコットはいますか？
Yesterday, I was looking through the photos on my phone and remembered that I have met so many different mascot characters.
昨日、スマホの写真を見返していたら、これまで本当にたくさんのゆるキャラに会ってきたことを思い出しました。
The first time was during the Sapporo Snow Festival in 2023. I met the mascot of CoCo Ichibanya, and I thought they looked really interesting. I loved the concept.
初めて出会ったのは、2023年のさっぽろ雪まつりです。
そこでCoCo壱番屋のゆるキャラに会い、「すごく面白いな」と思いました。コンセプトもとても気に入りました。
Nekoichi（ネコイチ）
From that point on, I became really interested in mascots and set myself a life mission: to meet Kumamon, the mascot of Kumamoto Prefecture, because I feel like Kumamon is the most famous mascot in all of Japan.
それ以来、ゆるキャラにすっかりハマってしまい、熊本県のご当地キャラ「くまモン」に会うという人生の目標ができました。
というのも、くまモンは日本で一番有名なマスコットだと思うからです。
Later, in 2024, I attended Gunma-chan’s birthday in Maebashi. Many other mascots were there too, such as Mikyan, Chiba Kun, and Funassyi. Kumamon was there as well, but they were high up on a balcony, so I couldn’t get close to them. I don’t count that as mission complete.
その後、2024年には前橋で開催された「ぐんまちゃん」のお誕生日イベントにも参加しました。
そこには、みきゃんやチーバくん、ふなっしーなど、たくさんのマスコットが集まっていました。
実はくまモンも来ていたのですが、高いバルコニーの上にいて、近くまで行くことができませんでした。
なので、あれはまだ“ミッション達成”とはカウントしていません。

Last February, I met a famous mascot from Kochi Prefecture called Chiitan. Chiitan is famous for their crazy videos on the internet—so crazy that the government of Kochi cut all official ties with them.
昨年の2月には、高知県の有名なマスコット「ちぃたん☆」にも会いました。
ちぃたん☆は、インターネット上で公開しているクレイジーな動画で有名です。
あまりにも過激すぎて、高知県庁が公式な関係をすべて解消してしまったほどなんです。

Most recently, I met Chiba Kun for the second time. I was visiting my friends at Chiba Station and was completely surprised to see Chiba Kun there.
最近では、千葉駅に友人を訪ねた際、チーバくんに2回目の再会を果たしました。
まさかこんなところで会えるとは思っていなかったので、姿を見つけたときは本当にびっくりしました。
