I can’t believe it’s October already! Time is flying, although I’m very
glad that the weather is cooler now. October is the month when people
celebrate Halloween, but in the UK we don’t get as excited about it as
Americans. There are parties, and children sometimes go ‘trick or
treating’, but not many people pay attention!
もう10月なんて信じられないよ！時間がたつのは早いけど、
今は涼しくなってきたことが本当に嬉しいよ。
10月ってハロウィーンを祝う月だけど、イギリスではアメリカほど盛り上がらないんだよ。。
パーティーをしたり、子供達が”trick or treating”をしに出かけたりするけど、
ほとんどの人はハロウィーンには無関心だね！
However, just after Halloween, the 5th of November is a special day in the
UK. This is Bonfire Night, which celebrates the failure of the ‘Gunpowder
Plot’ in 1605. A group of men wanted to kill the king and take over the
government by blowing up the Houses of Parliament with barrels of
gunpowder. One of the men, Guy Fawkes, was arrested and killed, so now
people in the UK build large fires in parks and throw a model of Guy Fawkes
on top of them. There are also a lot of fireworks displays around the
country, and Bonfire Night is a good time to spend outside before the
weather gets too cold.
でも、ハロウィーンのすぐ後の11月5日はイギリスでは特別な日。
Bonfire Night(焚き火の夜)と呼ばれる日で、
1605年に起こった火薬陰謀事件が失敗に終わったことを記念する日なんだ。
とある男達の集団がたくさんの火薬で国会議事堂を爆破して王様を殺し、政府を乗っ取ろうとしたんだ。
その集団の一人の男がGuy Fawkesで、逮捕の後処刑され、
今ではイギリスの人々が公園で大きな焚き火を作ってGuy Fawkes人形を焚き火のてっぺんに
投げ入れるんだ。
さらに、たくさんの花火を国中で見ることができるよ。Bonfire Nightは寒くなる前に外で過ごすには
グッドタイミングなイベントだよ。
The recent film ‘V for Vendetta’ contains many references to Guy Fawkes and
the Gunpowder Plot. The main character wears a costume that looks like Guy
Fawkes, which is still a powerful image in British culture.
最近の”V for Vendetta”「Vフォー・ヴェンデッタ」という映画はGuy Fawkesや
この火薬陰謀事件のことがよく描かれているよ。
主人公がGuy Fawkesみたいなコスチュームを着ているんだけど、
それって、イギリス文化において未だに強烈なイメージなんだよね。
