Last week I was able to experience Japan like never before – with my parents!

We did so many things that it is difficult to tell you everything in a short blog.

先週両親と、今までにない日本ならではの素晴らしい経験をしたの！

短いブログのなかでは伝えきれないくらい色々な事をしたわ。

 

First, we went to some of the World Heritage sites in Kyoto such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Nijo-jo Castle, and Kinkaku-ji Temple.

We also saw other famous sites such as Sanjusangendo, Arashiyama and Kyoto Tower.

まず初めに、世界遺産でもある、清水寺、二条城、金閣寺に行きました。

他にも有名な　三十三間堂、嵐山、京都タワーも見に行きました。

 

 

 

My favorite was Ninomaru Palace of Nijo-jo Castle.

I was enchanted by the gold leaf, elaborate wood carvings, and the beautiful wall paintings of powerful tigers, winding pine trees, and wide-eyed hawks.

The Palace also gave me a sense of the strength and power of the shoguns which still resonates with the buildings today.

特に気に入ったのは、二条城の二の丸御殿です。

金箔、精巧な木彫、美しい虎の壁画、風に揺れる松の木、大きく見開いた目の鷹、
素晴らしく、魅了されてしまいました。

この二の丸御殿を建てたと言われている将軍のパワーを感じることも出来ました。

 

 

 

 

 

After Kyoto we returned to Tokyo for the remainder of our sightseeing activities.

On Tuesday we went to the Edo Tokyo Museum in Ryogoku.

I was really surprised because when we arrived they asked us if we wanted a free English guide.

There was a line of guides seated behind the counter waiting to take customers on tours of the museum.

So, we said yes, and a very friendly woman walked us through the museum and explained the history of Edo and the artifacts on display.

京都に行った後、残りの観光をするので、東京に戻りました。

火曜日には、
両国にある江戸東京博物館に行きました。

無料の英語のガイドが必要かと聞いてくれたので、本当にびっくりしました。

カウンターの後ろには、ツアー客を座って待つガイドの列が出来ていました。

ガイドをお願いすることにしたら、とっても親切な女性のガイドさんが、
博物館中一緒に廻ってくれ、江戸の歴史や、工芸品の説明をしてくれました。

 

That same day we went to a sumo wrestling match at Kokugikan.

When we arrived there was a large group of middle school students arriving as well.

They were all wearing white tops and black bottoms and they took up about 6 rows of seats!

Then there was one woman who would yell the name of the sumo wrestler she wanted to win extremely loud and long right before each match.

Nobody else seemed to yell like her, so I thought she must have loved sumo very much.

同じ日、国技館の相撲も観にいきました。

私達が着いたとき、中学生の集団と
鉢合わせました。　皆一様に、上が白、下が黒の同じ服を着ていて、 6列も席を埋めていました。

対戦の前に応援している力士の名前を、ホントに大きい声で叫んでいる年配の女性もいました。

彼女みたいに叫んでいる人は他にいなかったので、
相撲がよぽど好きなんだなぁと思いました。

 

I was really interested in the sumo wrestler’s ritual right before the actual fight.

They did a lot of body slapping and throwing salt.

They also moved very slowly and would sway from side to side and stretch and bend their backs back.

It was all very interesting to watch.

And then when the fight would start it would suddenly get very exciting and just as quickly as it started it would end.

本番の前の力士の儀式みたいなものにとても興味を持ちました。

身体を叩いたり、塩を撒いたりして
いました。

とってもゆっくりとした動作で、身体を横に傾けたり、背中を後ろに
曲げてストレッチをしたりもしていました。

見ていてとても面白かったです。

対戦が始まると、急にテンションが上がり、あっと言う間に始まり、あっという間に
終わってしまいました。

 

 

 

 

Thursday was “fish day” as we called it because we went to Tsukiji, ate a sushi
breakfast, and went to Hakkeijima Sea Paradise.

My parents really wanted to wake up early and see the tuna auction.

So, we reserved a taxi for them at 3:30 in the morning from their cheap business hotel in Akihabara to take them to Tsukiji fish information center.

Due to too many tourists the number of people allowed to see the auction is limited to 120 per day.

So, you have to get there early to get a spot in line.

I wanted to go, but I couldn’t because I live in Chiba prefecture and it was much
to early for the trains to arrive by 3:30 AM.

Anyhow, my parents had a fantastic time at the auction and I met up with them afterwards to stroll through the general outside market.

木曜日は「魚の日」。朝食に寿司を築地で食べ、その後八景島シーパラダイスに
行ったので、こう呼ぶことにしたわ。

私の両親は早起きして、マグロの競りを
見たかったのです。

朝の3時半に秋葉原の安いホテルから、タクシーを
拾い、築地おさかな普及センターに行きました。

競りを見に来る観光客多すぎるので、実際見られるのは1日120名までと限られて
います。

ですので、早く行って、並ばなくてはいけません。

私も行きたかったのですが、千葉に住んでいるので、朝の3時半までに築地に着く
には電車がなく、行くことが出来ませんでした。

ともあれ、私の両親は競りで
素晴らしい時間を過ごし、

その後私も合流し、築地場外市場をブラブラしました。

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lastly, on Friday, we went to a Geisha dance performance at Shimbashi Enbujo Theatre in Ginza.

My mom really enjoys dancing.

In fact, she is part of a folk dancing group in America and she does many different kinds of dances from all over the world.

So, she was interested in seeing a Geisha dance performance.

When we arrived there was a long line outside of the theater and almost all of the women wore kimonos and had their hair beautifully done.

There was live music and singing during the performance and it was very interesting to watch.

I couldn’t understand most of what they were saying, but I could understand a little bit of the story just by watching them dance.

I hope one day my Japanese will be good enough where I will be able to
understand the next dance that I go to.

金曜日の最後は、銀座の新橋演舞場に、芸者の舞を観にに行きました。

母は芸者の舞の鑑賞をとても楽しみました。

アメリカでフォークダンスのグループ
に所属しているので、世界中の色々なダンスを踊っているのです。

ですから、芸者の舞を観るのに興味を持っていたのです。

演舞場の外には
長い列が出来、ほとんどの女性が着物を着ていて、髪も綺麗に結いあげて
いました。

音楽や歌が生演奏で、観ていてとても面白かったです。

何を言っているかは、ほとんど分からなかったけれど、
踊りを観ていて、少しだけどんなお話なのかは分かりました。

次にいつかまたこの踊りを見て、どんなお話なのか理解出来るくらい、私の日本語の
力が付いていると良いなぁと思います。

 

The next day my parents returned to America.

I was very sad to see them go, but I was also delighted that they decided to
come and visit Japan.

My parents felt that the best part of Japan was the people.

Everyone was very polite, friendly, and eager to help us throughout our travels.

I hope they will come back again some day!

次の日、両親はアメリカに帰りました。

行ってしまうのを見て、とっても悲しかったけど、同時に日本に来てくれたことに感謝しました。

両親は日本の一番良いところは、「人」だと感じていました。

皆さん丁寧で友好的で、旅の間中、何かあると私達を助けようとしてくれました。

いつかまた、両親が遊びに来てくれることを期待しています！
