carryは「運ぶ・持っていく」、overは「境界を越えて向こう側へ」。carry overは、物事を現在の期間・場所・状況で終わらせず、次の側まで運ぶ感覚です。
語順｜carry it overが正しい
「〜を持ち越す」のcarry overは分離可能です。名詞ならcarry the balance over / carry over the balanceの両方が可能ですが、代名詞は必ず間に置きます。
- ○ We carried it over to next week.
- × We carried over it to next week.
一方、「影響が残る」の自動詞用法では目的語を置かず、carry over into/to/fromがよく使われます。
