My Journey to Japan by Georgia

Hello! My name is Georgia.
I’m originally from the UK, and in 2025 I finally made my long-time dream of living in Japan a reality. It’s something I had been hoping for for quite a while, so being here now feels very special to me.
I’ve just started at b and am still getting used to everything, but I’m really looking forward to meeting you in lessons and getting to know you.
Here’s a little bit about me and my life!
こんにちは！Georgia（ジョージア）です。
イギリス出身で、以前から憧れていた日本での長期滞在の夢を叶え、2025年に来日しました。
bでのレッスンはまだスタートしたばかりで、慣れないこともありますが、これから皆さんとレッスンでお会いできることをとても楽しみにしています。
ここからは、私自身や日々の暮らしについて、少しご紹介させてください。

I grew up in a small town close to London. While it’s very easy to get to London by train (about 30mins), it feels completely like the countryside! Everything is so green and it looks especially beautiful on a sunny day (which is quite rare in the UK).
ロンドンの近くにある小さな町で育ちました。
電車で約30分ほどでロンドンに行ける便利な場所なのですが、雰囲気はまるで田舎そのものなんです。
自然がとても豊かで、特に晴れた日は本当に美しく感じられます（イギリスでは晴れる日があまり多くないので、なおさら特別なんですよ）。

I loved going for long walks with my family dog in the woods. There are so many cute animals like squirrels and deer. I always recommend that people visit the countryside if the go to the UK.
実家のワンコと一緒に森の中をのんびりお散歩しながら、長い時間を過ごすのが大好きでした。
リスや鹿など、かわいらしい動物たちにもたくさん出会えるんです。

イギリスを訪れる機会があれば、ロンドンだけでなく、こうしたカントリーサイドにもぜひ足を運んでみてほしいなと、いつもおすすめしています。

I also lived in London for a few years after graduating University. London is a great city with so many famous tourist sites and fun things to do. There are lots of parks where you can escape the busy city.
大学卒業後は、数年間ロンドンで暮らしていました。

ロンドンは有名な観光スポットも多く、楽しいアクティビティでいっぱいです。
大都会ではありますが、広い公園も多く、少し足を伸ばせば都会の喧騒から離れてリフレッシュできる場所もたくさんあります。

Although I love London, it is very expensive. It’s difficult to eat out cheaply. That’s something I really appreciate about Japan; there is plenty of cheap and delicious food to choose from.
ロンドンのことは大好きですが、物価がとても高いのが少し大変なところでもあります。特に外食を気軽に楽しむのはなかなか難しいんです。
その点、日本はお手頃で美味しい食べ物がたくさんあり、改めて良さを実感しているところです。

My interest in Japan started in secondary school, when my friend showed me anime. I’m not a big fan of anime, but it did inspire me to learn more about Japan. This led me to discovering Japanese beauty and fashion, which became my obsession. I loved watching Japanese beauty youtubers and I really wanted to understand what they were saying. This is what inspired me to start learning Japanese.
日本に興味を持ったきっかけは、中学生の頃に友人がアニメを見せてくれたことでした。

私自身はアニメの大ファンというわけではないのですが、それをきっかけに日本という国についてもっと知りたいと思うようになりました。
そこから日本の美容やファッションに興味を持つようになり、気づけば夢中になっていました。
日本の美容系YouTuberの動画を見るのが大好きで、「何を話しているのか理解できるようになりたい」と強く思ったことが、日本語を学び始める大きなきっかけになりました。

I studied Japanese as my major at university, so I understand how hard it is to learn a completely different foreign language at the start. It takes a lot of confidence to speak in a language you’re not comfortable in. At first, I was so embarrassed to make mistakes, that I would avoid talking in Japanese as much as possible.
大学では日本語を専攻していました。ですので、これまで触れたことのない言語を一から学ぶことの大変さもよく分かっています。
慣れない言語で話すには、とても勇気がいりますよね。
私自身も最初の頃は、間違えることが本当に恥ずかしくて、できるだけ日本語で話すのを避けてしまっていました。

Then in my second year of university in 2017, I went to Japan as an exchange student and it turned into the best year of my life. My Japanese was very bad at the beginning, but over the course of the year I improved a lot and gained some confidence. I even managed to get a part time job where I had to speak Japanese with customers.
そして大学2年生だった2017年、交換留学生として日本を訪れました。
その一年は、私の人生の中でも最高の一年になりました。

最初の頃は日本語が本当に拙くて不安もありましたが、一年間を通して大きく上達し、少しずつ自信もついていきました。
さらに、日本語でお客様と接するアルバイトにも挑戦することができたんですよ。

I always wanted to come back to Japan after graduating, but unfortunately, I graduated in 2020 during the Corona pandemic. This put a stop to my plans, which was very disappointing. Now it’s 2026 and I’m so excited that I had the opportunity to come back. During my year abroad, I didn’t travel much, I basically stayed in Tokyo for the whole year. So, this time, I would love to travel a bit more and see new areas of the country.
大学卒業後は、もう一度日本に戻りたいとずっと思っていました。
しかし、2020年に卒業した当時はちょうどコロナ禍の真っただ中で、残念ながらその計画は一度立ち止まることになってしまいました。

とても悔しい気持ちもありましたが、そして今、2026年。こうして再び日本に戻る機会をいただけたことを本当に嬉しく思っています。

交換留学中の一年間は、ほとんど東京で過ごしていたため、あまり旅行をすることができませんでした。
ですので、今回は、もう少し旅行をして、日本の新しい場所を見てみたいと思っています。

In my free time I love going to the cinema and watching movies. I also love practicing nail art. It takes me a long time to do but I find trying out new designs so much fun. I would love to get better and maybe study to get a qualification in the future.
休日は映画館で映画を観るのが大好きです。
また、ネイルアートの練習も楽しんでいます。完成までに時間はかかりますが、新しいデザインに挑戦する時間がとても楽しくて夢中になってしまいます。
これからもっと腕を磨いて、将来は資格取得にも挑戦してみたいと思っています。
