Ai’s Golden Week Challenge

While some people spend April planning trips for Golden Week, I spend it… catching up on Detective Conan.
I started watching Conan back in school, in Spanish—where, for some reason, all the characters had different names. (Why do they do that? How did Kogoro Mouri become Carlos Guzman??) I made it to around episode 360 in college, but the dub stopped there, so I ended up pausing.
4月と言えば、ゴールデンウィークの計画を立てる人が多いと思いますが、私はというと、『名探偵コナン』を観て過ごしています。
コナンは学生時代にスペイン語で観始めたんですが、どういうわけか登場人物の名前が全然違っていたの。「どうしてだろう？毛利小五郎がカルロス・グスマンって、どういうこと？」って、ずっと不思議に思っていたんです。
大学時代には360話くらいまで観ましたが、その後吹き替えがそこで止まってしまって、一旦中断しちゃいました。

Then, last year, my sister and I decided we’d try to catch up with the anime to watch the new movie. Of course, there were already over 1,000 episodes by then, so… spoiler alert: we didn’t make it in time. Still watched the movie, though. Did we understand it? No, not really—the Japanese was a bit much for us. But we had fun anyway.
昨年、妹と「最新映画を観る前にアニメで追いつこう！」って決めてまた観始めたんだけど…その時点で既に1,000話以上もあって！
案の定、アニメを全話観るのには間に合わなかったの。
それでも映画はちゃんと観に行ったわ。理解できたかって？うーん、正直言うとあまりで、日本語がちょっと難しかった。でも、それでもすごく楽しかったわ。

This year, we challenged ourselves again. We picked up from around episode 800, were we left off and now we’re past 1,050. Still not fully caught up, but we went to see the new movie anyway (again 😅). The good news is we understood way more this time, so either the case was simpler or our Japanese improved—probably both. That only made me love the movie even more.
今年もまた挑戦してみました！
前回観たのが800話くらいだったので、そこから再開して、今では1,050話を越えました。
まだ完全には追いついていないけれど、それでも新しい映画を観に行きました（またしても）。
嬉しいことに、今回はかなり理解できました。事件が簡単だったのと、自分たちの日本語力が上がったのが両方あったのでしょうね。そのおかげで、映画がさらに好きになりました。

Oh, and a fun fact about me—I love Conan as a series, but I’ve got a bit of a love-hate thing with the main character. Yes, he’s a genius, but… let’s just say he’s lucky most characters around him have pretty low IQ stats. I adore (almost) every other character, though, so I endure the smug little brat 😂
あ、それと、ちょっと意外かもしれませんが、コナンのシリーズは大好きなんだけど、主人公のコナンのことは、好きか嫌いか微妙な気持ちなんです。
確かに天才だけど…まぁ、周りのキャラクターたちがかなりIQ低めなことに助けられてるって思うのよ。
ほかのキャラクターたちは大体みんな大好きだから、あの生意気なガキには我慢しているんです。

Next year, we’ve got a new plan—because third time’s the charm, right? Since Conan is both my go-to for winding down after a long day and my current addiction, we’re aiming to fully catch up this year. That way, next April, we’ll only watch the manga-based episodes to stay sharp. This time, we’ll be ready for the movie… probably.
来年に向けて、新たな作戦を考えたわ—三度目の正直って言うしね！
アニメのコナンは長い一日の終わりにリラックスするのにぴったりだし、今めちゃくちゃハマっているので、今年中にちゃんと追いつくことを目指すわ。
そうすれば、来年の4月にはアニメ全体ではなく、マンガを原作としたエピソードだけに集中できるはず。
今度こそ映画に向けて準備万端…のはずよね！
