Greetings everyone, hope you are staying dry from the humidity! The wet air has pushed my phone towards a mental breakdown, it thinks it’s been soaked and wouldn’t charge from time to time! Definitely something I’ve not imagined before living in Japan!

蒸し暑い日が続いていますが、ジメジメに負けず元気にお過ごしかしら？
この湿気のせいで、私のスマートフォンは調子がおかしくなってしまったの。
水に濡れてしまったと勘違いしているみたいで、ときどき充電できなくなってしまうのよ。
日本に住む前には、まったく想像もしなかったトラブルだわ！
Speaking of which, I am currently packing for my summer holiday back to London. It’s been two years since I was back and I have to say, I really miss the food (and the people, of course). Although having an interesting reputation, English food is something I grew up on and is very dear to me. I can be very honest and tell you that it is far from the best, but it’s something you can’t quite replace. The fry ups, the roast dinners, the tea, the puddings (we call desserts pudding, by the way) and even the slightly depressing office lunches.
そういえば、私は今、夏休みにロンドンへ帰省するための荷造りをしているところなの。
ロンドンに帰るのは2年ぶりで、向こうの食べ物が何より恋しいわ。もちろん、みんなに会えることもね。
イギリス料理って、あまり評判が良くないけれど、私にとっては子どもの頃から慣れ親しんできた、とても大切な味なの。
正直に言えば、世界一おいしい料理とはとても言えないわ。でも、それでも他には代えがたい魅力があるのよ。
イングリッシュ・ブレックファスト、ローストディナー、紅茶、プディング――ちなみにイギリスでは、デザートのことを「プディング」と呼ぶの――それに、あのちょっぴり憂鬱なオフィスランチでさえもね。
When I was working in my London office, I would often have to suffer a meal deal like many others when it comes to lunch time. A standard meal deal is a popular lunch option at many supermarkets, usually formed of an underwhelming sandwich, a drink and a bag of crisps, for a small amount of money. This, of course, isn’t anyone’s first choice, but it’s an easy one that can’t go wrong.
ロンドンで会社勤めをしていた頃は、お昼になると、多くの人と同じように「ミールディール」で済ませることがよくあったの。
ミールディールとは、イギリスの多くのスーパーマーケットで販売されている定番のランチセットのこと。あまり特別感のないサンドイッチに、飲み物とポテトチップスが付いて、お手頃な値段で買えるのよ。
もちろん、「今日は絶対これが食べたい！」と思って選ぶものではないわ。でも、手軽で失敗がなく、とりあえずこれにしておけば安心、という存在なの。
My go-to would be tuna mayo sandwich with salt and vinegar crisps. To eat it, include a little DIY. Once you have your sandwich, you would remove the top bread, shake your crisps well then place a generous amount of it on top of the tuna filling before returning the removed top. That’s all, and there you have it, a crisps sarnie (nick name for sandwich).
私のお気に入りは、ツナマヨサンドにソルト＆ビネガー味のポテトチップスの組み合わせだったわ。
でも、そのまま食べるわけじゃないの。ちょっとした「ひと手間」が必要なのよ！
まずサンドイッチの上のパンを外して、ポテトチップスの袋をよく振るの。そしてツナの上にポテトチップスをたっぷりのせたら、外しておいたパンを戻すだけ。
これで完成！ これだけで、「クリスプス・サーニー（ポテトチップス・サンドイッチの愛称）」の出来上がりよ。
Now, I understand this sounds weird, but don’t knock it before you try it. It’s what sustained many Brits from school to work! More than the food itself, it’s the good old times hanging out with friends whether at school or in the office that I miss from time to time, and the sarnie is a media that carries it. The nostalgia is always stronger when it’s closer to returning home. I can’t wait to be in London again, on familiar streets, and maybe, with a crisps sarnie.
「えっ、本当に？」と思うかもしれないけれど、食べる前から敬遠しないで、ぜひ一度試してみてほしいわ。
このサンドイッチは、子どもの頃から社会人になるまで、多くのイギリス人のお腹を満たしてきた定番なのよ。
でも、私が恋しく思うのは、食べ物そのものだけではないの。学校や職場で友達と過ごした、何気ない時間なのよね。そして、このサンドイッチは、そんな大切な思い出を運んできてくれる存在なの。
故郷へ帰る日が近づくほど、懐かしい気持ちはますます大きくなるものよね。
ロンドンの見慣れた街を歩きながら、ポテトチップスサンドを頬張る日が待ち遠しいわ。
