Write Great Fiction：素敵な物語を書こう
I love reading a good story. Both in books and in role-playing games (RPGs). But sometimes I really hate when a writer takes a direction I didn’t expect…Like, killing off my favorite character!
私は、面白い物語を読むのが大好きなの。
本はもちろん、RPG（ロールプレイングゲーム）のストーリーを楽しむのも大好きだわ。
でも、ときどき作家が「えっ、そっちに行っちゃうの！？」っていう、まったく予想していなかった展開にすることってあるわよね。
そんなときは、本当にイヤになっちゃうことも……。
たとえば、お気に入りのキャラクターが死んじゃうとか！
So, I’ve been thinking: I want to write a story myself; I want to be behind the wheel for a change, be the one who takes the reader for a ride. But it’s no easy feat, right? To write a story, that is.
そこで、「自分で物語を書いてみたい！」ってふと思ったの。
たまには自分がハンドルを握って、読者を物語の世界へ連れていく側になってみたいのよね。
でも、物語を書くって、そんなに簡単なことじゃないわよね？
Well, so I thought, until I came across a book (that’s a little old but still valid) about how to write great fiction. In fact, it comes from a series of books called Write Great Fiction.
……なんて思っていたのだけれど、そんなときに出会ったのが、面白い物語を書くためのコツを教えてくれる一冊の本。
少し前に出版された本だけれど、今でも十分参考になる内容なのよ。
実はこの本、『Write Great Fiction』というシリーズの一冊なの。
The book is titled Plot & Structure and is by James Scott Bell. This book has proven to be indispensable, absolutely phenomenal for helping to sort out ideas and goals. It’s a book for rookies and veterans alike, and if you’ve ever wanted to write a story, whether it be a book or other, I highly recommend you start here. You can apply the techniques you learn about story-writing to other media easily, such as games, comics, screenplays, etc.
ジェームズ・スコット・ベルの著書『Plot & Structure』は、物語のアイデアや目標を整理するのに、なくてはならない一冊になっているの。
これから物語を書いてみたい初心者はもちろん、経験豊富な人にもおすすめだわ。
もし一度でも「自分で物語を書いてみたい」と思ったことがあるなら、それが小説でも、それ以外のものでも、まずはこの本から始めてみることをおすすめするわ！
ここで学べるストーリー作りのテクニックは、ゲームやコミック、脚本など、いろいろなジャンルにも応用できるのよ。
The best tips this book offered were what the author called 1) “the LOCK system”:
Lead – a lead character who we feel we have to watch
Objective – a want or desire to get or get away from something
Confrontation – a reason to worry about the lead character
Knockout – a satisfying ending
And there you have it—the first letters of these four elements spell “LOCK”!
この本で紹介されている中でも、特に参考になったのが、著者が「LOCKシステム」と呼んでいる考え方なの。
Lead（主人公）
― 思わずその行動を追いかけたくなるような主人公
Objective（目的）
― 何かを手に入れたい、あるいは何かから逃れたいという目的や願望
Confrontation（対立・困難）
― 主人公のことが心配になってしまうような対立や困難
Knockout（決め手）
― 読み手が「よかった！」と思える、満足感のある結末
この4つの頭文字を取って、「LOCK」というわけなの。
and 2) “a disturbance and two doorways”:
Disturbance – a promise of confrontation to come
1st Doorway – a path of no return that starts the journey
2nd Doorway – a path of no return that sets up the journey’s end
そしてもうひとつが、「ひとつの波乱と、ふたつの扉（a disturbance and two doorways）」という考え方なの。
Disturbance（波乱）
― この先、何かが起こりそう！と感じさせる出来事
1st Doorway（最初の扉）
― 主人公が後戻りできなくなり、物語が本格的に動き出すきっかけ
2nd Doorway（2つ目の扉）
― 再び後戻りできない状況となり、物語をクライマックスへと導くきっかけ
I shall leave you with this key advice from the author, because unfortunately, this book is only available in English! It may be quite hard to read if you haven’t yet finished Photo Journal 4.
そんなわけで、今回は著者からの大切なアドバイスをいくつかご紹介してみたの。
残念ながら、この本は英語版しかないの！
『Photo Journal 4』をまだ終えていない方には、原書を読むのはちょっと難しいかもしれないわね。
But I think if you buy a digital copy, it should be easy enough to utilize a translation app to help you get through it. I suggest translating paragraph by paragraph for the best accuracy.
でも、電子版を購入すれば、翻訳アプリを使いながら読み進めることもできると思うわ。
その場合は、段落ごとに翻訳するのがおすすめ！
そのほうが、より正確に内容を理解しやすいのよ。

＝「ハンドルを握って」「主導権を握って」
今回の記事では、こんなふうに登場しました。
I want to be behind the wheel for a change.
「たまには自分がハンドルを握る側になってみたい（＝自分が動かす側になってみたい）」
behind the wheel は、文字どおり「車のハンドルを握っている＝運転している」という意味だけでなく、自分が物事をコントロールする・主導権を握るというニュアンスでも使える表現です。
たとえば、
Who’s behind the wheel on this project?
「このプロジェクトを仕切っているのは誰？」
It’s time for me to get behind the wheel.
「そろそろ私が主導権を握る番ね」
今回のChandraのように、「今度は自分が物語を動かす側になってみたい！」という場面にもぴったりの表現なんです。
