At the end of the summer, something fun happens in Sweden. Friends and families come together outside (or inside, if it is cold) to eat crayfish. This party is called a kräftskiva, which means “crayfish party.”
夏の終わり、スウェーデンではちょっと楽しいイベントがあります。
友人や家族が集まって、屋外でザリガニを楽しむのです。もちろん、寒いときは室内で！
このパーティーは、スウェーデン語で 「kräftskiva（クレフトフィーヴァ）」 と呼ばれています。つまり「ザリガニパーティー」です。

What Is a Crayfish Party?：ザリガニパーティーって？

A crayfish party is a special occasion that’s dear to every Swedes heart. We eat small, red crayfish called kräftor. The crayfish are boiled in water with salt, sugar, and lots of fresh dill. This gives them a strong, salty, and slightly sweet taste.
ザリガニパーティーは、スウェーデンの人々にとって、とても大切で愛されている行事です。
このパーティーでは、「クレフトル（kräftor）」と呼ばれる小さな赤いザリガニを味わいます。
ザリガニは、塩、砂糖、そしてたっぷりの新鮮なディルを加えたお湯で茹で上げられます。
そうすることで、塩気とほのかな甘みが効いた、風味豊かな味わいに仕上がるのです。

Because we eat the crayfish with our hands, it can get pretty messy! You peel off the shell, pull out the meat, and dip it in butter or mayonnaise. Everyone eats slowly and talks a lot.
ザリガニは手で食べるので、どうしても手が汚れてしまいます！
殻をむいて身を取り出し、バターやマヨネーズをつけて食べるんです。みんなでゆっくりと食事を楽しみながら、会話も弾みます。

Why Do Swedes Do This?：なぜスウェーデンではザリガニパーティーをするの？

Long ago, only rich people could eat crayfish. There were also strict rules about when people were allowed to catch them. The fishing season used to open on August 8th. This became a reason to celebrate! Over time, more and more people joined in, and the tradition grew. When more and more of the middle-class started having these dinner gatherings in the early 1900’s, they wanted to make it a more light hearted affair and not as strict as the upper-class so they started giving out funny paper hats and decorating with paper lanterns to loosen up the mood.
昔、ザリガニは裕福な人たちだけが食べられる特別な食べ物でした。また、ザリガニを捕ってよい時期にも厳しい決まりがあり、かつて漁が解禁されるのは8月8日と決められていました。

そのため、この「解禁日」がみんなでお祝いをするきっかけになったのです！

時代とともに参加する人が増え、ザリガニパーティーはスウェーデンの伝統として広まっていきました。

1900年代初頭になると、中流階級の人々の間でもこうした食事会が開かれるようになります。上流階級のような堅苦しい集まりではなく、「もっと気軽に楽しめるパーティーにしたい！」と、ユニークな紙の帽子をかぶったり、紙のランタンを飾ったりするようになりました。

Today, almost everyone in Sweden enjoys a crayfish party at least once during the late summer or early autumn.
In fact, we eat so many crayfish that we have to import a huge amount from other countries like China and Turkey.
現在では、夏の終わりから秋の初めにかけて、ほとんどのスウェーデンの人が一度はザリガニパーティーを楽しみます。
実は、スウェーデン国内だけでは足りないほどたくさんのザリガニを食べるため、中国やトルコなど海外からも大量に輸入しているんですよ。

ザリガニパーティーは、単なる食事の場にとどまりません。
友人たちとくつろぎ、夏の名残の暖かな日々を楽しみながら、秋から冬へと季節が移り変わる前に、みんなで喜びを分かち合う機会でもあります。

こうしたザリガニパーティーには、素朴な伝統を大切にしながら、人と人とのつながりを楽しむ、スウェーデンらしい文化が表れています。

So, if you ever visit Sweden in late summer, don’t be surprised if you see tables full of red crayfish, paper moon hats, and people singing before every sip of schnapps. It is one of Sweden’s most loved traditions!
