Once upon a time, a girl was born in the biggest city in the world. It is known by many nicknames—The City That Never Sleeps, The Big Apple, Empire City—but you might know it as New York City.
昔々、世界最大の都市にひとりの女の子が生まれたの。
「眠らない街（The City That Never Sleeps）」「ビッグアップル（The Big Apple）」「エンパイア・シティ（Empire City）」など、さまざまな愛称で呼ばれている街―皆さんには「ニューヨーク・シティ」としておなじみかもしれないわね。
For me? I know it simply as “The City”.
でも、私にとってはただひと言。「The City（ザ・シティ）」なの。
I want to share with you some tips, tricks, and treats for anyone planning on traveling to The City—things like how to find the best restaurants, how to use the subway system, the best sight-seeing and shopping areas, but also things that are unique to the City. I want to also share with you how to avoid scammers, how to stay safe, and how to find the best places to visit for anything you need.
これから何回かに分けて、ニューヨーク旅行を予定している方に役立つ情報をご紹介したいと思っているの。
おすすめのレストランの探し方や地下鉄の利用方法、観光やショッピングにぴったりのエリアはもちろん、ニューヨークならではの楽しみ方についてもお話ししたいわ。
さらに、詐欺に遭わないためのポイントや、安全に過ごすコツ、目的に合わせたおすすめスポットなどもご紹介していく予定よ。
“But I’m not going to New York!” you may say, and that’s okay. Many of the things I will be teaching you will be good for any city or town you visit.
「でも、私はニューヨークに行く予定はないわ！」
そんな方も大丈夫。
これからお話しする内容の多くは、ニューヨークだけでなく、どんな街を訪れるときにも役立つはずなの。
Today, I want to teach you about the most basic thing: Airports.
さて、第1回となる今回は、旅のスタート地点でもある空港についてお話しするわね。
For New York City, there are three major airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport. JFK is in Queens, LaGuardia is in Brooklyn, and Newark is actually in New Jersey, but is actually very close to Manhattan.
ニューヨークには、大きな空港が3つあるの。
ジョン・F・ケネディ国際空港（JFK）
ラガーディア空港（LaGuardia）
ニューアーク・リバティー国際空港（Newark）
JFKはクイーンズ地区、ラガーディア空港はニューヨーク市内、そしてニューアーク空港はお隣のニュージャージー州にあるのだけれど、実はマンハッタンからとても近い場所にあるのよ。
■Newark Liberty International Airport（ニューアーク・リバティー国際空港）
Now, many people think that JFK or LaGuardia would be the best choice, but many overlook Newark. Typically, Newark flights are roughly 5-10% cheaper, have less traffic to get to a mid-town Manhattan hotel, and have better and more affordable options for transportation into the city. That means more money in your pocketbook for more important things, like food and shopping.
多くの人はJFKやラガーディアを選びがちだけれど、意外と見落とされているのがニューアーク空港なの。
実はニューアーク発着の航空券は、JFKより5〜10％ほど安いことも多く、マンハッタン中心部までの渋滞も比較的少ないの。
さらに、市内までの交通手段もリーズナブルで便利なものが充実しているわ。
つまり、移動費を節約できれば、その分をショッピングやおいしい食事に使えるということなのよ。
■LaGuardia Airport（ラガーディア空港）
ラガーディア空港は、この20年で大きく生まれ変わったの。
かつては「アメリカで最悪の空港」とまで言われていたけれど、今では全米No.1の空港に選ばれるほどになったのよ。
清潔で近代的、そして美しいラガーディア空港は、日本でいうと成田空港よりも羽田空港に近い雰囲気だわ。
そのぶん、航空券の価格が少し高めだったり、利用者が多く混雑していたりすることもあるの。
ただし、ラガーディア空港を発着する便のほとんどはアメリカ国内線なの。日本から利用する場合は、カリフォルニア州やテキサス州などの主要ハブ空港で乗り継ぎが必要になることが多いので、その点は覚えておくと安心よ。
■John F. Kennedy International Airport（ジョン・F・ケネディ国際空港）
Our last option is Old Faithful—JFK. JFK is where many international tourists come into The City; It’s sturdy and dependable, and is considered the #1 visited airport for international travelers in the area. Because of this, they usually have more staff than other airports who are bilingual, and most airlines like JAL or ANA will have many options for JFK.
最後の選択肢は、昔から変わらず頼りになる定番のJFK空港よ。
ニューヨークを訪れる海外旅行者の多くが利用する空港で、安定感があり、信頼できる存在なの。
ニューヨーク周辺では、海外からの旅行者に最も多く利用されている空港ともいわれているわ。
そのため、ほかの空港に比べると、複数の言語を話せるスタッフが多いのも安心できるポイントよね。
また、JALやANAなどの航空会社もJFK発着の便を多く運航しているのよ。
No matter which airport you choose, I always recommend printing out a map of the airport or downloading it onto your smartphone. This will help you with finding where you’re going, but also let you know where things like the nearest coffee shop are—personally, as someone who only gets to go home once or twice a year, I follow the New York tradition of getting a Dunkin Donuts coffee while complaining about traffic.
どの空港を利用するとしても、空港の地図を印刷して持って行くか、スマートフォンにダウンロードしておくことをおすすめするわ。
目的の場所まで迷わず移動しやすくなるのはもちろん、「一番近いコーヒーショップやトイレはどこ？」といった情報もすぐに確認できるので、とても便利なの。
ちなみに私は、年に1～2回しか故郷へ帰れないからこそ、ニューヨークに着くと必ずすることがあるのよ。
それは、ダンキンドーナツのコーヒーを片手に、「やっぱりニューヨークは渋滞がひどいなぁ」と文句を言うこと（笑）。
これも、ニューヨーカーらしい恒例行事のひとつなのかもしれないわね。
