「入力作業を自動化する」「請求書の処理を自動化する」「機械が自動で動く」。日本語ではどれも「自動化」に関係しますが、英語では誰かが作業を自動化するのか、機械が自動で動くのかによって形が変わります。
作業や工程を自動化するなら、代表的な動詞は automate です。automate a task（作業を自動化する）、automate the process（工程を自動化する）のように使います。
難しい単語が出てこなければ、The system does it automatically.（システムがそれを自動で行います）や Now the computer does it for us.（今ではコンピューターが代わりにしてくれます）で十分伝わります。

automate は「人が行っていた作業を、機械やソフトウェアで自動的に処理できるようにする」という他動詞です。一方、すでに自動で動くものについて説明するなら run automatically や work automatically が自然です。
日本語の「自動化する」は英語で2つに分ける
- 人が作業・工程を自動化する：automate + 対象
- 機械・機能が自動で動く：run / work / start automatically
We automated the reporting process. は「私たちが報告工程を自動化した」。The reporting system runs automatically. は「報告システムが自動で動く」です。

automate は、これまで人が手作業で行っていた処理を、機械・コンピューター・ソフトウェアなどが自動で行えるようにする動詞です。

automate が出てこなくても問題ありません。「以前は人がしていた」「今はシステムがしてくれる」「その結果、時間が減った」と順番に説明すれば、自動化の意味はむしろ具体的に伝わります。
「効率化する」と「自動化する」の違い
自動化は効率化の方法の一つですが、同じ意味ではありません。
- automate：人の作業を機械・ソフトウェアが行えるようにする
- streamline：無駄な手順を減らし、流れを簡素化する
- improve efficiency：効率そのものを高める

よくある間違い
automate の後ろには対象を置く
We automated. だけでは、何を自動化したのか分かりにくくなります。We automated the task. のように対象を続けましょう。
automate と automatically を混同しない
We automatically the process. とは言えません。動詞なら automate the process、副詞なら The process runs automatically. です。
「勝手に動く」を always automatically にしない
機械が意図どおり自動で動くなら automatically。不具合などで「勝手に動いた」なら by itself や on its own が自然な場合があります。
The machine started by itself.
機械が勝手に動き始めました。
自動化しても人が完全に不要とは限らない
automate は作業の一部にも使えます。完全自動化なら fully automate、一部なら partially automate と表現できます。
