日本語の「問い合わせる」には、連絡する、情報を求める、確認する、質問する、という複数の動作が含まれます。英語では次のように切り分けます。
- 相手との連絡を開始する → contact / reach out to
- 具体的な内容を尋ねる → ask about
- 改まった形で情報を求める → inquire about
- 質問への回答を求める → ask a question
各表現の使い方と語順
contact + 人・組織
contact + 相手 の語順で、toは付けません。
- contact the company：会社へ問い合わせる
- contact us：当社へ問い合わせる
- contact the support team：サポートチームへ問い合わせる

ask + 人 + about + 内容
ask 人 about 内容、または相手を省いて ask about 内容 と言えます。

contact・inquire・reach outの違い
contact は連絡方法や目的を限定しない中立的な語です。inquire は情報を求める目的が明確で、contactより改まっています。reach out は単なる事務連絡よりも、人との接点を作って助けや返事を求めるニュアンスがあります。
会社の「お問い合わせ」ボタンには Contact Us が一般的です。問い合わせメールの書き出しには I’m writing to inquire about … が自然です。

contactやinquireが出てこなくても、何を使って連絡したかと何を知りたいかを基本語で言えば伝わります。

よくある間違い
× contact to the company
contactは他動詞なので、正しくは contact the company です。
× inquire the price
通常は前置詞aboutを入れて inquire about the price とします。
ask aboutとask forを混同する
ask about the price は「料金について尋ねる」、ask for a discount は「値引きを求める」です。
reach outだけで相手を続ける
相手を置く場合は reach out to the manager のようにtoが必要です。
