I recently went to karaoke with some friends. We missed our last train,
so we stayed there all night and had a really good time!
I love singing. One of my friends in Canada plays piano and
I sometimes sang with him. We wrote a few songs together
– I wrote the words and he wrote the music.
We had such a good time doing that!

After I went to karaoke last week, I became curious about where
karaoke came from, so I did a little bit of research on the Internet.
There are 2 different stories: some people say that karaoke started in
Kobe at a small snack bar.
Others say that the musician Daisuke Inoue started it when
he asked people to sing to his songs.
Either way, karaoke is very popular in Japan.
The first karaoke box opened in Okayama in 1984.
Since then, many people all over the world sing karaoke.
I grew up in Toronto, which has a very large Asian population.
At one intersection not far from my house, there were a few karaoke boxes.
I went there a few times when I was in high school.
In English, we say, I had a whale of a time, which means I had a really good time.

According to Japan Marketing News, the song Greeen by Kiseki was the most popular in 2008.
What will it be in 2009? Maybe we will know next year.
