New House and The Chinese Moving-in Ceremony
中国に伝わる“引っ越しの日”の習わし
Greetings everyone, I hope you are enjoying the new summer wind and the refreshing greens in the city. I am revering this brief period between the cold and the rainy season, but what is more, I am about to move into my new home very soon! Alongside the usual checklist of moving companies, packing, and contract signing, I’d also love to share a little Chinese superstition connected to my family roots with you.
こんにちは！街中を初夏の爽やかな風と、新緑が彩る季節がやってきましたね。
私はというと、寒い季節と梅雨の合間の、このほんの短い心地よい時期を満喫しているところなの。
そして実はもうすぐ、新しいお家へお引っ越しする予定なのよ！
引っ越し業者の手配や荷造り、契約のサインなど、やることリストに追われる毎日なのだけれど、今回はそんな“お引っ越し”にまつわる、私のルーツでもある中国のちょっと面白い迷信について、みなさんにお話したいと思います。
In China, moving is a great deal and it’s not to be taken lightly in any sense. We believe the first step (literally and metaphorically) into your new long term home is the most important, and it is make or break. There is a long protacode detailing from the time of day to which foot to step into the house! Among all, I’ve found a few I find endearing.
中国では、お引っ越しはとても大きな出来事とされていて、決して軽く考えてはいけないものなの。
新しい家に初めて足を踏み入れる瞬間は、実際の“最初の一歩”としても、新しい人生の始まりとしても、とても大切だと考えられていて、その後の運気を左右するとまで言われているのよ。
だから実は、「何時に入るか」から「どちらの足で最初に入るか」まで、細かなお作法のようなものがたくさんあるの。
その中でも今回は、私が特に“素敵だな”と思ったものを、いくつかご紹介したいと思います。
1.Do not enter empty handed. 手ぶらで家に入ってはいけない
Bring some rice in your left hand and a bottle of oil in your right. Many believe this to notify the house guardian deity that you are a resident from now on, and there will always be food and fortune in the house.
新しい家に入るときは、左手にお米、右手に油のボトルを持って入るのが良いとされているの。
これは、「これからこの家に住みます」ということを家の守り神に知らせる意味があると言われていて、家の中に食べ物や豊かさが絶えないように、という願いも込められているのよ。。
2.Prepare a brand new broom. 新しいほうきを用意する
You must sweep the front porch with the broom, to dust away the old and broken, and to welcome the new and fresh.
新しいほうきを用意して、家の入り口や玄関先を掃くのも大切な習わしのひとつなの。
これは、古いものや悪い気を払い、新しい幸運や新生活を迎え入れるためだと言われているのよ。
3.Bring some flowers.お花を持っていく
The blooms bring colour to the new life and fortune to the household. Besides, who doesn’t love a beautiful bouquet?
お花を新しい家に持っていくのも、縁起が良いとされているの。
色とりどりのお花は、新しい暮らしに彩りを添え、家に幸運を運んできてくれると言われているのよ。
それに、素敵な花束をもらって嬉しくない人なんて、なかなかいないわよね。
4.Place a red envelope under a new pillow. 新しい枕の下に「紅包（ホンバオ）」を入れる
The red envelope, containing money, is given to children during Chinese New Year to ward off evils. It later became a common gift to celebrate happy events. A new pillow signifies a new beginning. The amount of money inside the envelope can be 138 Yuan or 168 Yuan, both rhyming with “a lasting wealth” in Chinese.
中国では、お金を入れた赤い封筒「紅包（ホンバオ）」を、新しい枕の下に入れるという習わしもあるの。
紅包はもともと、旧正月の時期に子どもたちへ“厄除け”として贈られていたものなのだけれど、今ではお祝いごとの贈り物としても広く使われているのよ。
そして、新しい枕は“新しい始まり”の象徴。
封筒に入れる金額は138元や168元などが縁起が良いとされていて、中国語で「ずっと豊かでいられる」という言葉に響きが似ているのだそう。
5.Host a house warming party!引っ越し祝いのホームパーティーを開く
This is shared between China and the UK. We believe having people in the new house warms the aura and will help the home owner’s energy. But most importantly, it’s a great occasion to celebrate with loved ones!
これは中国とイギリス、どちらにも共通している習慣なのだけれど、新しいお家に人を招いて“ハウスウォーミングパーティー”を開くのも良いとされているの。
人が集まることで家の空気やエネルギーが温まり、住む人にも良い運気をもたらしてくれると考えられているのよ。
でも何より、大好きな人たちと新しいスタートを一緒にお祝いできる、とても素敵な機会よね。
Although sounding slightly hectic and strict, these rules all come from a humble wish to ensure a happy, stable life and it is to mark an important new beginning. So, wish me luck with the move, I will see you in the schools.
なんだか細かくて大変そうに思えるかもしれないけれど、こうした習わしにはすべて、「幸せで安定した暮らしになりますように」という素朴で温かな願いが込められているの。
そしてそれは、新しい人生の始まりを大切に迎えるためのものでもあるのよね。
