I’m Alex from the UK. I was born in England, but I grew up in Scotland, so today I’d like to talk a little about an important part of Scottish culture: tartan and the kilt.
みなさん、こんにちは。イギリス出身のアレックスです。
生まれはイングランドですが、スコットランドで育ちました。
今回は、スコットランドの文化を語るうえで欠かせない「タータン」と「キルト」について、少しご紹介したいと思います。
The kilt is a traditional Scottish garment, similar in cultural importance to the kimono in Japan. It looks a bit like a skirt and is usually made of wool. The pattern on it is called “tartan.”
キルトはスコットランドの民族衣装で、日本の着物と同じくらい文化的に重要な存在です。
スカートのような見た目で、ウール（羊の毛）で作られることが多くあります。
生地の柄は「タータン」と呼ばれています。
Traditionally, kilts were worn by men, but nowadays women wear them too.
Tartan patterns are made up of vertical and horizontal lines in different colours. There are so many variations.
伝統的にキルトは男性が着用するものでしたが、現在では女性も着るようになっています。
タータン柄は、さまざまな色の縦と横の線を組み合わせて作られており、そのバリエーションはとても豊富です。
In the past, specific tartans represented different clans. A clan is like a large Scottish family, similar in some ways to historical samurai families in Japan. One of the most recognisable tartans is that of the House of Stewart, a royal family that once ruled Scotland. Their tartan features strong red and green colours—if you saw it, you would probably recognise it immediately.
かつては、タータンの柄によってそれぞれ異なる氏族（クラン）を表していました。
クランとは、スコットランドの大きな家族のようなもので、日本の歴史における武士の家系に少し似ています。
中でも特に有名なのが、かつてスコットランドを統治していた王家「スチュアート家」のタータンです。
赤と緑のコントラストが印象的で、見ればすぐにそれと分かるほど特徴的なデザインです。
Today, however, anyone can wear any tartan.
現在では、誰でも好きなタータンを自由に身につけることができます。
There is also the “Black Watch” tartan, which was originally used by a British military regiment. It features dark green, navy, and black tones. Although it once had a specific association, it is now widely worn by the general public and is one of the most popular tartan designs today.
また、「ブラックウォッチ」と呼ばれるタータンもあります。
これはもともとイギリス軍の連隊で使用されていたもので、濃い緑や紺、黒といった落ち着いた色合いが特徴です。
かつては特定の連隊と結びついていましたが、現在では一般の人々にも広く親しまれ、最も人気のあるタータンデザインのひとつとなっています。
Nowadays, tartan has evolved beyond traditional clothing. It’s no longer limited to kilts and has become a global fashion pattern. For example, the famous Burberry check is inspired by tartan. While it isn’t tied to a specific Scottish clan, it has become an iconic design in modern fashion. You’ve probably seen Burberry scarves—they’re very popular.
現在では、タータンは民族衣装の枠を超えて広がりを見せています。
キルトだけにとどまらず、世界的なファッションとして親しまれるようになりました。
たとえば、有名なバーバリーチェックもタータンにインスピレーションを受けたものです。
特定のスコットランドのクランに結びついているわけではありませんが、現代ファッションを代表するアイコニックなデザインのひとつとなっています。
バーバリーのスカーフは見かけたことがある方も多いのではないでしょうか。大人気ですよね。
Finally, another well-known Scottish textile is tweed. Tweed is a rough, woolen fabric often used for jackets. It’s durable, water-resistant, and commonly comes in earthy colours like olive green.
最後に、もうひとつ有名なスコットランドの織物として、ツイードがあります。
ツイードは粗めのウール生地で、ジャケットによく使われます。
耐久性と耐水性に優れ、オリーブグリーンなどの落ち着いたアースカラーが一般的です。
For me, tweed jackets always remind me of the British countryside where I grew up, as farmers often wore them.
私にとってツイードジャケットは、農家の人々がよく着ていた、私が育ったイギリスの田園風景を思い出させてくれます。
