Today’s one point English is about how to use ‘looking forward to’ & ‘can’t wait’
We use ‘looking forward to’ & ‘can’t wait’ when talking about happily anticipating an upcoming event.

今日のワンポイントレッスンは ” Looking forward to”と “can’t wait”よ。
“looking forward to”と”can’t wait”は楽しみにしている、今後予定されている
出来事について話す時に使うのよ。

≪Example≫
– Next weekend I’m going to Nikko to see the beautiful autumn leaves & the waterfall.
I’m really looking forward to it, they showed it on the TV news & the view looks spectacular.
≪例≫
– 来週、美しい紅葉と滝を見に日光に行く予定なの。
本当に楽しみだわ。テレビのニュースでやってたんだけど、景色が素晴らしかったの。
Negative meaning:
With ‘looking forward to’ we can also use it in a negative way i.e. for something
we don’t happily anticipate.
否定的な意味での用法：
“looking forward to”を否定的な意味でも使うことがあるの。
つまり、楽しみにしていない何かのことを言う時ね。
≪Example≫
– I have to go to the dentist tomorrow, I’m not looking forward to it,
I bet it’s going to be painful.
≪例≫
明日、歯医者に行かなきゃいけないんだ。全然気が進まないよ、
だって絶対に痛いからね。
≪Example≫
To increase the degree of anticipation for ‘looking forward to’ add ’really’ –
– I’m looking forward to the movie > I’m /really/ looking forward to the movie.
≪例≫
期待の度合いをもっと強めるためには、”really”を付ければいいのよ。
– その映画を楽しみにしている⇒その映画を本当に楽しみにしている。
‘Can’t wait’ is the same as ‘really looking forward to.’
≪Example≫
– I’m going snowboarding next week, I can’t wait, it’s been ages since I’ve been.
I hope the snow’s good!
– I can’t wait to see the movie = I’m /really/ looking forward to the movie.
“Can’t wait” “は、”really looking forward to”と同じ意味合いなのよ。
≪例≫
– 来週、スノーボードに行くの。前回行った時からだいぶ経ってるから、
待てないの（すごい楽しみなの）。いい雪だといいな！！
– その映画を観るのを待てない。＝その映画を観るのをとても楽しみにしている。
To increase the strength of ‘not looking forward to’ add ‘definitely’ –
– he’s not looking forward to his test tomorrow >
he’s /definitely/ not looking forward to his test tomorrow.
“not looking forward to”を強調して言いたい場合は、
“definitely”を付ければいいのよ。
– 彼は明日の試験に気が進まない。
⇒彼は明日の試験に全く気が進まない。
