始まりました！
スーパーマーケット、
コンビニ、そしてデパートでも！
クリスマスの飾り付けが！

What a wonderful sight.
And although they always arrive more than twomonths in advance, nothing warms my heart on a cold day like fake snowon a window or garland wrapped around a banister.

なんてすばらしい景色。
毎年2ヶ月以上前にこの景色はやってくるけど、窓の作りものの雪、手すりに巻き付いたガーランド、この寒い日に僕の心を温めるものは何もない。

I wonder…. To most people, is Christmas merely another day on the calender? Is it a holiday that you just can’t wait to “wrap up”(conclude)?
Is it a special time for you to celebrate with your loved ones?
Or, like me, is it a special time during the year that lasts for weeks on end?
ふと思うのですが、ほとんどの人たちにとってクリスマスはなんでもないカレンダー上のひとつの日なのか、それか早く終わらせてほしい休日なのか、愛する人と一緒に祝う特別な時なのか、僕にとっては何週間も特別な時が続く時間なのか。

I love almost everything about Christmas.
The lights. The fragrance of a wild tree perched in the middle of my living room.
The gift giving. The gift receiving. The time spent with family. And even being able to see my breath on a cold day. LOVE IT.

僕はクリスマスに関してほとんど全部気に入っています。
明かり、
リビングルームの真ん中に置かれた野生の木良い匂い。
誰かにあげるギフト。もらうギフト。家族と過ごす時間。寒い日に見える白い息でさえ、大好きだ。

For me, I think the beginning of Christmas is marked, not by Santa’s appearance in the malls nor by the limited edition toys in the stores,but by the Christmas specials being shown on TV.
When I was a youngster,I remember coming home from school every day in the month of December and flipping on the TV to watch all the Christmas specials I had seen a thousand times before. Saved By The Bell, The Simpsons, and my all-timefavorite, Home Improvement. (You should check them out! If you search onYouTube, you can find almost all of them)

僕にとって、クリスマスがやってきたと実感するときは、サンタがあちこちの店に現れる時ではなくテレビ番組でクリスマス・スペシャルを観た時だ。
子どもの頃、学校から家に帰ってきてテレビをつけると過去に数千回と見たことのあるクリスマス・スペシャルの番組が12月は毎日のように流れていたことを覚えている。Saved By The Bell、The Simpsons、そしていつでもお気に入りなのがHome　Improvement（チェックしてみて、Youtubeで調べるときっと全部見つけられると思うので）。

Of course, the highlight of my Christmas is Christmas morning: Gift exchange. Not so much because I love receiving gifts, but because it’s a time for my brother, sister, (and their significant others), my mother and father to get together and just be us. On occasion, I even get to see my dad crack a smile; a rare sight, indeed. But one that fills my heart with joy, because that man has worked so hard his entire life for the sake of his family. Love you dad! It’s also a time when my mom gets really emotional, which proves, even though she’s a tad crazy around the edges, she truly loves her family with all her heart. Love you mom!

もちろん、私のクリスマスの一番好きなはクリスマスの朝のギフト交換。ギフトを受けたり、あげたりが理由ではなくてこれが、お兄さんやお姉さん（彼らの大事な人とも）、母、父と集まるそして一緒にいられる時間でもあるからだ。
たまに父がにっこりと笑うレアな光景もみれる。父は人生ですごく家族のために頑張ってくれた人なので心を嬉しさでいっぱいにしてくれる光景なんだ。
父を愛せよ！母はとても感情的で普段はおかしいけど本当に家族のことを愛している。母を愛せよ！

Now on to the saddest part of Christmas. That day when my dad tells me it’s time to take down the Christmas tree decorations so he can toss the tree in front of our house to get picked up by the garbage man. By the way, not once has my family even considered buying a fake tree. There’s really is something special about having a live tree in your home. I really miss that smell in Japan…

クリスマスの一番悲しいところは父がクリスマスツリーをおろして（デコレーションをとって）クリスマスツリーを庭にごみとして持っていってもらうように捨てる時。
ちなみにうちは一回も偽物のツリーを飾ったことはありません。
本物のツリーを家に置くことに特別なものがあるから。日本にいるとそのにおいが恋しくなります。

Anyways, that’s what Christmas means to me. What does it mean to you?
