Winter arrived early this year, and I was so busy that December slipped by almost unnoticed. Before I knew it, it was the 23rd, and I suddenly remembered something important: I was supposed to host (to organize and welcome people to your home) a Christmas party the very next day.
今年はあっという間に冬がやってきて、毎日とにかく忙しくしていたの。
気づいたら12月はほとんど記憶にないまま過ぎていて、はっと我に返ったときには、もう23日だったのよ。
そこで急に、大事なことを思い出したの。
なんと、次の日にクリスマスパーティーを私の家で開く予定だったんだわ。
In many Latin countries, Christmas is celebrated on the 24th rather than (instead of) the 25th. It’s a day centered around family, food, and spending long hours together. For the second year in a row, my sister’s friends came to celebrate Christmas at our place. This time, we made lasagna, because I love it, and paella, to honor (to show respect or appreciation) our Spanish roots. Neither dish is simple, but cooking together never feels heavy.
ラテン系の国では、クリスマスは25日ではなく、24日にお祝いするのが一般的で、
家族で集まって、美味しいものを囲みながら、時間を気にせず、ゆったり一緒に過ごす一日なのよ。
昨年に続いて、妹の友人たちが私たちの家に来てくれて、今年も一緒にクリスマスをお祝いしたの。
今回は、私が大好きなラザニアと、自分たちのスペインのルーツへの想いを込めて、パエリアを作ることにしたの。
どちらも決して簡単な料理じゃないけれど、みんなで一緒に作る時間は、むしろ楽しかったわ。
Last year, we baked a cake ourselves, but this year we didn’t have the time, so we ordered one instead. It was good… but I still prefer the Tres Leches cake we make at home. The decorations were very cute, though. Flavor-wise, I’ve had better.
昨年は、みんなでケーキを手作りしたんだけど、今年はそこまでの時間がなくて、今回はお店で注文することにしたの。
美味しかった…けれど、やっぱり私は、おうちで作るトレスレチェスケーキ（3種類のミルクを使ったケーキ）のほうが好きだわ。
デコレーションはとっても可愛かったのよ。
でも、味に関しては、もっと美味しいのを食べたことはあるかな。
While the food was cooking, and even while we were eating, we played Mario Party and Uno Flip. I usually choose Peach and always lose, but this time I played as Shy Guy (Heiho in Japanese) and, to my surprise, I won. Some people say Peach is cursed (believed to bring bad luck). I’m starting to believe it.
料理を作っているあいだも、そして食事をしながらも、みんなでマリオパーティやUNOフリップをして遊んだの。
私はいつもピーチを選ぶんだけど、なぜか毎回負けちゃうのよね。
だから今回は、シャイガイ（日本ではヘイホーね） を使ってみたら、なんとびっくり…勝っちゃったのよ！
ピーチは「呪われてる」って言う人もいるみたいなんだけど、……これ、だんだん本当な気がしてきたわ。
As for gifts, my sister gave me another 500-piece Disney jigsaw puzzle, just like last year. It made me wonder if this could become a small tradition. She also gave me a handmade keychain with embroidered (decorated with stitching) mushrooms. They looked like they could belong in Wonderland. Inside the box, she wrote a message that said, “For our resident picky eater” (picky eater = someone who dislikes many foods). She knows me well. I hate mushrooms, so it was clearly a joke, and it really made me smile.
プレゼントは、妹から昨年に続いて、500ピースのディズニーのジグソーパズルをもらったの。
「これって、ちょっとした恒例行事になるのかな？」なんて思ったりもしたわ。
それと、『不思議の国のアリス』の世界に出てきそうな、きのこの刺繍が施された手作りのキーホルダーもくれたのよ。
箱の中には「我が家の偏食さんへ」っていうメッセージが書いてあってね。
そう、妹は私がきのこ嫌いなのを分かった上での、完全にジョークだったんだけど、それがなんだか嬉しくて、思わず笑っちゃったわ。
I was finally in bed after 4 a.m., and I have to say, it was a very fun Christmas.
