1．文字どおり「一日の終わりに」

day を文字どおり一日として捉え、仕事や活動が終わる時刻を表します。

2．比喩的に「結局のところ」

さまざまな事情や意見を考えたうえで、最後に残る重要な結論を示します。日本語では「結局のところ」「何だかんだ言っても」「最終的に大切なのは」などが自然です。

結局のところ、予定より健康のほうが大切です。

比喩の at the end of the day は、単なる時系列の「最後」ではありません。いろいろ考えても、最後に重要なのはこれだ、と結論をまとめる感覚です。

なぜ「結局のところ」になる？

at は一点、the end は終点、of the day は一日の範囲を示します。文字どおりなら「一日という期間の終点で」です。

そこから、一日を振り返るように「全部を考え終えた時点で残る結論」という比喩が生まれました。長い議論や複雑な事情を一日の出来事に見立て、その終わりに判断するイメージです。

語順と文法

At the end of the day, ＋結論 のように文頭へ置く形が特に一般的です。コンマを置き、その後ろに話し手の結論を続けます。

結局のところ、私たちは決断しなければなりません。

文中や文末にも置けます。

What matters at the end of the day is whether our customers are satisfied.

文字どおりの用法でも語順は同じですが、today, every day, before going home など時刻を示す文脈があれば区別しやすくなります。

when all is said and doneとの違い

日本人が間違えやすいポイント

at the end of dayと冠詞を抜かない

基本形は at the end of the day です。定型表現では the を入れます。

× At end of the day, we need results.
○ At the end of the day, we need results.

at the endとin the endを混同しない

at the end of … は「〜の終点で」、in the end は「最終的に」という副詞句です。at the end の後ろには通常、of the day / of the meeting / of the movie のように、何の終わりかを続けます。

使いすぎると決まり文句に聞こえる

比喩用法は便利ですが、会議や説明で何度も繰り返すと、中身の薄い決まり文句に聞こえることがあります。本当に重要な結論を示す場面に絞ると効果的です。
