be different fromの意味は？different than・different toとの違いと使い方

be different fromは、「〜と違う」「〜とは異なる」という意味です。人・物・考え方・以前の状態など、二つのものを比べて同じではないことを伝えます。

基本はA is different from Bという語順です。different thanやdifferent toも見かけますが、地域や後ろに続く形によって使われ方が異なります。迷ったときは、英語圏で広く通じるdifferent fromを選べば安心です。

be different fromの意味とコアイメージ

differentは「同じではない・異なる」という形容詞です。fromには「起点から離れる」という感覚があり、比較する相手から離れている、つまり「〜とは違う」というイメージになります。

比較相手が単語ではなく「〜したこと・〜である状態」の場合は、whatやhowを使えます。

differ from｜動詞で「異なる」

differは動詞なので、be動詞は不要です。be different fromより少しかたく、説明文やビジネス文書でよく使われます。

the same as｜「〜と同じ」

反対の意味はthe same asです。前置詞をfromにしないよう注意しましょう。

This price is the same as yesterday’s.
