both A and B は、AとBの両方が同じ状態にある、または同じ動作をすることを表します。基本の形は次のとおりです。
both ＋ A ＋ and ＋ B
- Both coffee and tea are available.
コーヒーも紅茶も用意されています。 - She speaks both English and Spanish.
彼女は英語もスペイン語も話します。 - The room is both clean and comfortable.
その部屋は清潔で、しかも快適です。
both と and はセットです。both A or B ではなく、both A and B とします。
bothの基本3パターン
both A and B：AもBも
Both Tom and Anna are coming.
トムもアンナも来ます。
人や物を具体的に2つ並べる、もっとも基本的な形です。
both of＋限定された複数：その両方
Both of them are ready.
彼らは2人とも準備ができています。
both of＋the／these／myなど＋複数名詞、またはboth of＋目的格の代名詞にします。
- Both of the plans sound good.
その2つの案はどちらもよさそうです。 - Both of my sisters live abroad.
私の姉妹は2人とも海外に住んでいます。 - I invited both of them.
私は2人とも招待しました。
both of students のようにはせず、both students または both of the students とします。
代名詞＋both：私たちは2人とも
Tom and Anna are both ready.
トムとアンナは2人とも準備ができています。
主語が we・you・they などの代名詞なら、bothを主語の後ろに置けます。ただし動詞の種類によって位置が変わります。
- be動詞の後ろ：They are both busy.
- 一般動詞の前：We both like jazz.
- 最初の助動詞の後ろ：They have both finished.
AとBは同じ形にそろえる
both A and Bでは、AとBを平行構造にします。名詞なら名詞、形容詞なら形容詞、動詞なら動詞を並べるのが基本です。
名詞をつなぐ
We need both time and money.
私たちには時間もお金も必要です。
形容詞をつなぐ
Her explanation was both clear and practical.
彼女の説明は分かりやすく、実用的でもありました。
動詞・動詞句をつなぐ
He both cooks and cleans.
彼は料理も掃除もします。
She wants both to study abroad and to work overseas.
彼女は留学も海外就職もしたいと思っています。
Aだけが動詞でBが名詞、といった不ぞろいを避けると、意味がすぐ伝わる英文になります。
both A and Bが主語なら動詞は複数形
AとBをandで結ぶため、主語は原則として複数です。be動詞ならare／were、一般動詞の現在形なら三単現のsを付けません。
- Both my brother and my sister are teachers.
兄も姉も教師です。 - Both the manager and the staff agree.
マネージャーもスタッフも同意しています。 - Both options look good.
どちらの選択肢もよさそうです。
Both Tom and Anna is coming. ではなく、Both Tom and Anna are coming. が基本です。
これは、動詞に近い主語へ一致させることがあるeither A or Bやneither A nor Bとの大きな違いです。
bothとboth ofの使い分け
- both books：2冊とも
- both the books：その2冊とも
- both of the books：その2冊の両方
- both of them：それらの両方
名詞の前には both を直接置けます。the・these・myなどで限定された名詞では、both the books と both of the books のどちらも使えます。代名詞の前ではboth of us／you／themとofが必要です。
both・either・neitherの違い
- both A and B：AもBも両方
- either A or B：AかBのどちらか
- neither A nor B：AもBもどちらも〜ない
Both Saturday and Sunday work for me.
土曜日も日曜日も、どちらも都合がいいです。
Either Saturday or Sunday works for me.
土曜日か日曜日のどちらかなら都合がいいです。
Neither Saturday nor Sunday works for me.
土曜日も日曜日も、どちらも都合がつきません。

not bothは「両方とも〜ではない」とは限らない
not both は通常、「両方というわけではない」という部分否定です。少なくとも一方は当てはまらない、という意味になります。
Both answers are not correct.
2つの答えが両方とも正しいわけではありません。
「2つとも正しくない」とはっきり言うなら、次のようにします。
Neither answer is correct.
どちらの答えも正しくありません。
誤解を避けるには、Not both answers are correct. または Neither answer is correct. のように、意図に合う形を選びましょう。
both A and Bとnot only A but also Bの違い
どちらも「AもBも」を表せますが、ニュアンスが少し違います。
- both A and B：AとBの両方を対等に、簡潔に示す
- not only A but also B：AだけでなくBも、とBを追加して強調する
She is both smart and kind.
彼女は賢くて親切です。
She is not only smart but also kind.
彼女は賢いだけでなく、親切でもあります。

日本人が間違えやすいポイント
bothとorを組み合わせない
both tea or coffee ではなく、both tea and coffee とします。
主語なのに単数動詞を使わない
Both Ken and Yuki is here. ではなく、Both Ken and Yuki are here. とします。
代名詞の前ではofを入れる
both them ではなく、both of them とします。ただし主語の後ろなら They both … が使えます。
bothを重ねない
Both of them both agreed. のように重ねず、Both of them agreed. または They both agreed. とします。
bothがすぐ出てこないときの簡単な言い換え
- Tom is coming, and Anna is coming too.
トムが来て、アンナも来ます。 - The two of them are ready.
その2人は準備ができています。 - I like coffee. I also like tea.
コーヒーが好きです。紅茶も好きです。
会話では、無理に一文へ詰め込まず、and・too・alsoで分けても十分自然に伝わります。
