なぜofを使うの？
of は、全体とその一部・構成要素を結び付けます。consistには「成り立つ」という意味があり、consist ofで「of以下の要素によって全体が成り立つ」という関係を表します。

主語が三人称単数ならconsistsになります。

過去の構成ならconsisted ofを使います。

is consisted ofが誤りになる理由
日本語の「構成されている」に引かれて受け身を作りたくなりますが、consist ofは通常それ自体で状態を表します。
× The team is consisted of five members.
○ The team consists of five members.
そのチームは5人のメンバーで構成されています。
受け身の形を使いたいなら、be composed ofまたはbe made up ofにします。
○ The team is composed of five members.
○ The team is made up of five members.
次の3つは意味が近くても文法の型が違います。

consist ofは構成という比較的安定した状態を表すため、通常は進行形にしません。

一方、consisting ofが名詞を後ろから説明する分詞句として使われることはあります。

compriseも「〜から成る・〜を含む」を表しますが、通常はofを付けません。

学習者は次の形で覚えると安全です。
- 全体＋consists of＋部分

comprise ofとはしません。be comprised ofも実際には広く使われますが、迷う場合はconsist ofまたはbe composed ofを選べば明確です。
consist ofとincludeの違い
consist ofは、挙げたものが全体の構成を示す響きがあります。includeは「その中に〜も含む」であり、ほかの要素が残っている可能性があります。

consist inは別の意味
consist inは「本質・重要な点が〜にある」という意味で、consist ofとは異なります。ややフォーマルな表現です。

本当の友情の本質は、互いに信頼することにあります。

課題の本質は、適切なバランスを見つけることにあります。

be動詞を入れない

「構成されている」という日本語訳ではなく、consist ofの型をそのまま覚えましょう。
三単現のsを忘れない
× The plan consist of three stages.
○ The plan consists of three stages.
主語planが単数なのでconsistsです。
全体と構成要素を逆にしない
○ The band consists of four musicians.
そのバンドは4人の音楽家で構成されています。
全体bandが主語、構成要素four musiciansがofの後ろです。
素材だけならbe made ofが自然なこともある
The table is made of wood.
そのテーブルは木でできています。
完成品の素材を言うだけならbe made ofが自然です。consist ofは複数の成分や構成要素を列挙するときに向いています。
簡単な英語で言い換えるなら
consist ofがすぐ出なければ、have・include・there areを使えます。
