in detail は「詳しく」「細部まで」という意味です。概要だけでなく、必要な情報や小さな点まで含めて説明・検討するときに使います。
explain in detail、describe in detail、discuss in detail など、説明・描写・検討を表す動詞と相性のよい表現です。一方、detail と details の使い分けや、in more detailの語順で迷う方も多いでしょう。

in detailの意味は「詳しく・細部まで」
in detail は、物事を大まかに述べるのではなく、一つひとつの要素や細部まで取り上げることを表します。
- Please explain the problem in detail.

日本語では文脈に応じて「詳しく」「詳細に」「細かく」「具体的に」などと訳せます。
なぜin detailで「詳しく」になるの？
detail は「細部・細かい点」を表す名詞です。前置詞 in には「ある状態・方法で」という働きがあります。
そのため in detail は、直訳的には「細部という形で」「細部を含む状態で」。そこから「細部まで詳しく」という意味になります。
同じように方法・状態を示すinは、in writing（書面で）、in English（英語で）、in private（内密に・二人きりで）のような表現にも見られます。
語順は「動詞＋目的語＋in detail」が基本
in detailは、動作がどの程度詳しく行われるかを説明する副詞句です。目的語がある場合は、通常その後ろに置きます。
主語＋動詞＋目的語＋in detail
- He explained the process in detail.
彼はその手順を詳しく説明しました。 - The guide describes each route in detail.
そのガイドは各ルートを詳しく説明しています。 - Let’s review the contract in detail.
契約書を細かく確認しましょう。
in detailは通常、説明する動詞や目的語の後ろに置きます。文頭の「詳しく言うと」には、More specifically, … や To explain in more detail, … のほうが自然です。
in more detail・in greater detailの使い方
「もっと詳しく」と言いたいときは、in more detail が最も使いやすい表現です。少し文章的に「さらに詳細に」と述べるなら in greater detail も使えます。

それをもう少し詳しく説明していただけますか？ - We’ll discuss the budget in more detail tomorrow.

「詳しすぎるほど」と強める場合は in great detail、「非常に詳しく」なら in considerable detail もあります。

in detailとdetailsの違い
in detail は「詳しく」という方法・程度を表す固定表現です。一方、複数形の details は「詳細・細かい情報」という具体的な情報そのものを指します。
- He explained the plan in detail.
彼は計画を詳しく説明しました。 - He gave us the details of the plan.
彼は私たちに計画の詳細を教えてくれました。
in detailは「どのように説明したか」、the detailsは「何を伝えたか」に注目していると考えると分かりやすいでしょう。
detailをdetailsにしない
「詳しく」という固定表現は単数形の in detail です。

一方、go into details（細かい話に入る）のように、detailsを名詞として使う別の形はあります。

話や文章が時間・分量をかけて展開されることへ焦点があります。詳しい場合もありますが、「長々と」という含みになることもあります。
He spoke at length about the challenges.

曖昧な内容を絞り込み、具体的な点を示す表現です。必ずしも長く詳しく説明するとは限りません。

固定表現はそのまま in detail です。

目的語の位置に注意する
explainには「人に物事を説明する」という語順があります。人を直後に置く explain me は誤りです。

「詳しく教えて」をteachで直訳しない
情報を詳しく説明してほしいなら、explain や tell me more が自然です。
