Lately, two of my boyfriend’s good friends from Israel came to visit us here in Tokyo.
They knew almost nothing about Japan before coming, and were quite surprised by a lot of things they saw!
最近、ボーイフレンドの仲の良い友人ふたりがイスラエルより私達を訪ねて東京に来ました。
彼らは日本に来る前は日本の事についてほとんど何も知らなかったので、たくさんの物を見てかなり驚いていました。
First of all, the lack of dustbins on the street.
But even so, everywhere you go is very clean and there’s no litter on the ground.
They were especially impressed by the cleanliness of the subway stations.
最初に、道にゴミ箱があまりないことです。
それなのに行く所どこもが綺麗で、ごみが落ちていないのです。
彼らは特に地下鉄が清潔であることにも驚いていました。
Our Israeli friends were also impressed to see people fall asleep anywhere possible, on the trains, in cafés, and even in a club!
イスラエルの友人達はまた日本人が電車の中や、カフェ、クラブでさえどこでも寝ることが出来ることにもビックリしていました。
They were also pleased that I could read the word “ramen” on a restaurant sign, but when they pointed at a sign with some complicated kanji, they didn’t understand why I couldn’t read it. When I explained that there are 3 types of letterings in Japanese, and that it can take years to learn, they were stupefied!
彼らは私がレストランの看板の“ラーメン”の文字が読めた事に感激してくれましたが、他の看板を指さした時、私は漢字が分からず、彼らには何故私が漢字を読めなかったのか理解できませんでした。
日本には3つのタイプのレタリング（ひらがな、カタカナ、漢字）があると説明しましたが、その意味も全然理解出来ないようでした。
Since they came here after traveling in India and Brazil, it took them some time to get used to walking around with their passport (to get tax refund for shopping), without the fear it’ll be stolen.
日本に来る前、彼らはインドとブラジルを旅していました。
盗まれることを恐れずにパスポートを持ち歩く（買い物の際に税金がかからないので便利）ことを慣れるのに時間がかかりました。
All in all, I think they’ve managed to learn a lot about Japanese culture, just from being in Japan for 2 weeks.
I hope they will come back soon.
結局、たった2週間でしたが、彼らが日本にいる間に多くの本の文化について学べたのではないかと思います。
また来てくれると嬉しいです！
